Surprising no one, Oppenheimer won Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday night, following a string of Oppenheimer wins including Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. The award was announced by Al Pacino, who, in a somewhat awkward manner, neglected to read out the other nominees before opening the envelope. Oh, Al!

Pacino, in a hilarious unorthodox take on the classic “And the Oscar goes to…” line we all know and love, instead said, “Uh, I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes… And my eyes see Oppenheimer.”

Pacino began to read out the names of the producers, who accept the award for Best Picture, but this was drowned out by applause. It’s the biggest award of the biggest night in Hollywood, Al! Most people give it a little more pizazz.

Director Christopher Nolan, who had already given one acceptance speech for his win for Best Director, didn’t speak again, and instead let his fellow producers have their moment in the spotlight.

Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas spoke first, saying “I could deny it, but I have been dreaming about this moment for so long. But it seemed so unlikely that it would ever happen, and now I’m standing here, and everything’s gone out of my head.” Thomas went on to thank Nolan, and the entire Oppenheimer crew.

Producer Charles Roven spoke next, reflecting on his long and fruitful career with Thomas and Nolan. “Five movies over twenty years, and it’s been one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had. They’re a fantastic team.” All in all, it was a nice, if expected, win for the Oppenheimer team.

Oppenheimer—the harrowing biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man who is credited with inventing the atom bomb—had long been the favorite to win Best Picture, beating out the nine other nominees: American FictionAnatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The HoldoversKillers of the Flower MoonMaestroPast LivesPoor Things, and The Zone of Interest. Nolan’s film had already swept the BAFTAs, the Director’s Guild Awards, and the Producer’s Guild Awards. On top of that, it was the most-nominated film at the Oscars, with a grand total of 13 nominations. So this win didn’t come as a surprise!

Oppenheimer was the big winner of the 2024 Oscars, taking home a grand total of seven wins: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Original Score. Barbie may have won at the box office, but Oppenheimer won the awards.

And that’s a wrap on the 2024 Oscar season! Now, who’s ready to leave those stuffy Oscar movies behind and dive into summer movie season? Bring on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire!
