It turns out that John Cena wasn’t completely naked and afraid during his infamous bit at last night’s (March 10) Oscars.
Cena — who was presenting the ceremony’s Costume Design category —had a little help from a nude-colored undergarment, as captured in pictures taken backstage, per HuffPost. The underwear was obscured by an envelope, which he used to protect his package from the public eye when he initially took the stage.
Four-time Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel introduced the spoof after recognizing that last night was “the 50th anniversary of what used to be the craziest moment in Oscar history.”
“At the 46th Academy Awards in 1974, David Niven was in the middle of introducing Elizabeth Taylor when a nude man, a streaker, ran across the stage,” he told the audience. “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?”
Kimmel then reiterated, “I said, can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?”
Queue a visibly shirtless Cena, who sheepishly peeked his head out to beckon Kimmel over.
Cena confessed that he “changed his mind” and didn’t want to take part in the “streaker bit” anymore. However, Kimmel wasn’t having it. Cena eventually side-stepped onto the stage, holding tightly onto the envelope that would eventually reveal Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddington as the winner.
“Costumes… they are so important,” he quipped. “Maybe the most important thing there is. I can’t open the envelope.”
After the nominees were read aloud, Kimmel was shown styling Cena in a curtain.
“You look beautiful,” he told Cena as he departed the stage.
Kimmel addressed the bit on the red carpet, as a reporter told him that Cena is “a brave man” for going through with the spoof.
“Isn’t he?” Kimmel replied. “Well, I mean, if — not to say you don’t look like that with your clothes off. I’ve not had that opportunity. I guess when you look like that, you have no problem showing it to people, right? I mean, and also, he’s a funny guy.”
