Actress Sydney Sweeney responded to backlash after Sony and Marvel’s Madame Web failed to perform at the box office.

Sweeney, who appears in the film as Julia Cornwall, has become a rising star in film and TV in recent years, with appearances in the hit drama series Euphoria and rom-com Anyone But You. While Anyone But You became a box office darling, the Spider-Man spin-off didn’t see the same results.

Madame Web opened with a disappointing $51.5M international box office, shockingly less than the reported $80M budget, per Deadline.

The film also earned a remarkably low 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest rated of Sony’s spinoffs, per Forbes.

Sweeney, however, assured fans that she is unbothered by the film’s box office bomb.

In a recent interview, she told the Los Angeles Times, “I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen.”

Sweeney’s remarks come not long after her co-star Dakota Johnson shared her reaction to the film’s fate. In an interview with Bustle, Johnson — who stars as the titular character — admitted, “Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has.”

“It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee,” Johnson said. “Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.”

She also noted, “Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t. Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to f*cking want to see those.”

The film’s reception prompted Johnson to distance herself from the Marvel franchise. She told Bustle, “I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world.”

She added, “But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, Wait, what? But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”

It’s unsure whether the same can be said for Sweeney. But with the success of her previous roles, fans are sure to see the blonde flash across movie screens again, and soon. Her latest release, Immaculate, premieres in theaters March 22.
