Meghan McCain tried (and failed) to catch The View in a sketchy act when she claimed a portion of a recent interview was purposefully “edited out” of the show — though her investigation ultimately flopped when viewers realized that the moment she was referring to was merely a commercial break.

In a since-deleted post on X (formerly known as Twitter), McCain wrote, “I want to know what happened at 7 minutes and 53 seconds that is edited out of YouTube where they cut away with The View graphic away from the conversation,” per Entertainment Weekly.

The comment was a response to Megyn Kelly‘s praise of writer Coleman Hughes, who she said “calmly & expertly demolish[ed]” co-host Sunny Hostin after Hostin accused him of being a “pawn” of right-wing conservatives on Wednesday morning’s (March 27) broadcast.

In the 10-minute interview, which was posted to the show’s YouTube channel, Hostin denounced Hughes’ views on solving racism as “fundamentally flawed.” In response to his anti-reparations approach and hopes to help “disadvantaged” people by addressing them based on poverty rather than the color of their skin, Hostin suggested that he was a “charlatan of sorts” and said she believed his argument was “co-opted” by the right — even though, as Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out, he was “not a Republican” and he has “never voted for a Republican.”

“There’s no evidence that I’ve been co-opted by anyone,” Hughes fired back. “I have an Independent podcast. I work for CNN as an analyst. I write for the free press. I’m Independent in all of these endeavors and nobody is paying me to say what I’m saying. I’m saying it because I feel it.”

At that point in the YouTube version of the interview, The View‘s title graphic popped up and immediately cut to the next question. But it wasn’t because they edited part of the interview out, as McCain had previously suggested. Instead, it was because the live version went to commercial break before returning for the remainder of the panel’s interview with Hughes — so the one we see on YouTube simply spliced the two segments together.

McCain — who deleted her post after her followers pointed that out to her — was the Republican co-host on The View for four years before Griffin and Ana Navarro officially filled her empty seat in September 2022. Since then, she has been open about her “miserable” experience on the long-running daytime talk show.

“I just felt like I could not be the kind of mother, wife, and commentator I wanted to be in that kind of a chaotic environment,” McCain said on her Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat podcast. “I didn’t want to be the type of person that couldn’t live without being on TV every day — and I, too, questioned, when I left, if I could live without it. And then I was just so happy that I didn’t have to wear makeup every day.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
