Need a movie to watch tonight? We got you covered. Check out the 2023 coming-of-age drama When You Finish Saving the World, which has newly been added to the Netflix catalog.

The movie stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard as the distanced mother-son duo Evelyn and Ziggy Katz.

Directed by Jesse Eisenberg, the movie was based on Eisenberg’s audiobook of the same name, which was released on Audible in 2020 and starred Eisenberg and Wolfhard in main roles.

The story follows the Katz family as they struggle to connect to each other and other people in their lives. Ziggy, a cringey high school musician, has a crush on his activist classmate, who is smarter than him and way out of his league.

Meanwhile, Evelyn strikes up an inappropriate relationship with a minor at a domestic abuse shelter she volunteers at. She takes him out to dinner and offers to get him a college scholarship, despite his reluctance.

As the movie continues, tensions grow between Ziggy and Evelyn.

When You Finish Saving the World premiered to mixed reception and currently sits at a 61% acceptance rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers have voiced that the characters in the movie are one-note and that it doesn’t offer much social commentary; however, that seems to be the point. Ziggy and Evelyn don’t have much to offer aside from their privileged lifestyles. Ziggy struggles to express himself because his parents would rather intellectualize his feelings rather than help him navigate them, and Evelyn is desperate for the connection that she’s robbed from her son. The characters are simple and plain because sometimes, people are. They’re giving “head empty, heart full.”

Why Watch When You Finish Saving The World Tonight?

Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard are in the movie — isn’t that enough? The two offer great performances as they dial back their big personalities and craft a deeply awkward and stilted relationship.

When You Finish Saving the World is also an easy watch and can easily be accessed on Netflix, which is the movie’s first streaming home following its limited theatrical and video-on-demand release. With Wolfhard also being a key player in the streamer’s biggest hit Stranger Things, the movie is bound to gather tons of buzz over the weekend.

The movie can be enjoyed by the entire family and will appeal to teenagers enough to distract them from their screens. It’s a simple coming-of-age story with complicated emotions, a tricky family dynamic, and a young boy suffering from loneliness.

Perhaps it’s Gen Z’s Perks of Being A Wallflower.

Synopsis: Unable to connect with his peers and parents, a high schooler turns to his online music channel as his social worker mom forges a bond with another teen.
