This week’s new movies on VOD include intense action courtesy of the Jordan Peele-produced Monkey Man, the indie dramedy Downtown Owl, and Arthur the King, a true story starring Mark Wahlberg.

In Arthur the King, Wahlberg stars as Michael Light, an elite athlete who befriends a stray dog during an intense race through the mountainous terrain of the Dominican Republic. As Light and his team compete and race toward the finish line, they find a loyal ally in the dog they name Arthur the King. The feel-good adventure is a loving and heartwarming homage to man’s best friend.

Monkey Man

Monkey Man marks actor Dev Patel’s directorial debut, and the action thriller is an impressive first production. In this revenge story, Patel stars as Kid, a boy who witnesses his mother’s murder and vows revenge on those responsible. As an adult, he becomes a skilled fighter. After he tries and fails to kill one of the men responsible, and becomes a fugitive himself, and has to fight his way out of trouble while still trying to avenge his mother’s killers.

Downtown Owl

The new dramedy Downtown Owl, based on the book of the same name by Chuck Klosterman, is co-directed by Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe (who are also partners off-screen). The film takes place in Owl, North Dakota and stars Rabe, along with Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, and August Blanco Rosenstein as a few of the town’s residents whose lives intertwine during a massive snowstorm.
