Godzilla x Kong is the fifth film in WB’s “Monsterverse,” and the direct sequel to 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong. Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry reprise their roles, while Dan Stevens joins the cast. This time around, the big guys are fighting side by side, instead of fighting each other. Peace and love on planet Monsterverse! The movie opened in theaters nationwide on March 29, and went on to rake in a whopping $558.7 million at the worldwide box office. You may be wondering why, in that case, Warner Bros. would decide to rush the new Godzilla movie to digital platforms after just six weeks in theaters.

But that’s par for the course for most major studios these days. Even box office hits are getting released on “premium” video-on-demand—which is the industry term for charging movie theater prices for an earlier release on digital platforms—after a month in theaters or less. Even Barbie, the most successful film of 2023, was released on digital platforms by Warner Bros. after 13 weeks in theaters. The new Godzilla will soon be available to watch at home, but you’ll have to pay a pretty penny to watch it—more, even, than you might pay to watch the movie in theaters. Godzilla X Kong was released on digital platforms today, on Tuesday, May 14. Beginning today, you’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $24.99 to buy, and $19.99 to rent.

When will Godzilla x Kong be streaming on Max?

UPDATE 6/27/24: Max announced that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will stream on Max on July 4, 2024. Happy Independence Day to the two big guys!

The Godzilla x Kong streaming release date on Max has not yet been announced, but we know that Godzilla x Kong will be on Max eventually because it is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. All of the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. Dune: Part Two, for example, was released on PVOD six weeks after opening in theaters, and will be streaming on Max on May 21, about six weeks after it was released on PVOD.

If Godzilla x Kong—which is coming to digital about six weeks after opening in theaters—follows a similar release pattern, you can expect to see Godzilla x Kong on Max around June 25, 2024, about six weeks after its digital release date.
