The First Omen is streaming on Hulu as of today, so why not kick off Summer 2024 with some gruesome religious horror? Let’s call it Cult Girl Summer.

Directed by Arkasha Stevenson in her feature film debut, The First Omen is the sixth film in the Omen franchise, and a direct prequel to 1976’s The Omen. While The Omen told the story of a couple who is unknowingly raising the antichrist child, The First Omen tells the story of the young American nun (played by Nell Tiger Free) who stumbles into the conspiracy to breed the antichrist child in the first place.

Even though The First Omen is a prequel that quite clearly sets up the events of Richard Donner’s 1976 horror movie The Omen, the prequel movie also leaves room for even more Omen prequel movies, also starring Free’s character.

Read on for a thorough analysis of The First Omen plot summary, The First Omen ending explained, and a quote from Nell Tiger Free on the possibility of a First Omen sequel.

The First Omen plot summary:

The movie opens with Father Brennan (Ralph Ineson) asking a fellow priest, Father Harris (Charles Dance), about a conspiracy to breed an antichrist child. Father Harris gives Father Brennan a photo of a baby with the word “Scianna” written on it. Then Father Harris is killed by a falling window. Huh!

We flash-forward to 1971, where Margaret (Free) is a young American nun-in-training sent to complete her training at an orphanage in Rome. Margaret takes a special interest in a troubled, teenage orphan named Carlita (Nicole Sorace). The other nuns don’t like Carlita. She is often punished for her troublesome behavior, such as drawing disturbing images of pregnant woman and attacking other orphans. Margaret sympathizes with Carlita, because Margaret was also labeled as a “problem child” when she was young, due to disturbing visions that she saw.

Margaret joins her adventurous roommate for a night out. She drinks a lot, starts dancing with a man named Paolo (Andrea Arcangeli), and blacks out. She wakes up back at the orphanage with no memory of how the rest of the night went. Shortly after, Father Brennan approaches Margaret in a public square, and warns her to stay away from Carlita, whom he calls “Scianna.” Brennan says “evil things” will start to happen around her.

Margaret brushes him off at first, but then she witnesses a pregnant nun give birth to a demon child. Margaret thinks she was just seeing things. But shortly after, a different nun, Anjelica, kills herself after Carlita shows her a disturbing drawing of a pregnant woman. Margaret meets with Brennan again, and he tells her there’s a secret plot in the Church to breed an antichrist child. Why? To give the public something to fear, therefore driving them back to the Church.

Margaret snoops around in the orphanage and discovers files on “Scianna.” She goes through the files with Father Brennan, and they discover that over a dozen women have been raped by the devil in an attempt to breed the antichrist. Most of the babies die, but at least one survived, and was branded with a mark. Margaret remembers that Carlita has the mark on the roof of her mouth. But the surviving baby in Father Brennan’s photo has the mark on its scalp. You probably know where this is going: Father Brennan examines Margaret’s head and discovers that, yes, she has that mark. Two Satan-bred babies survived: Margaret and her half-sister Carlita.

Margaret’s memories of that black-out night at the club come flooding back. She remembers that she was strapped to a table and ritualistically raped by a Satan-like creature. Apparently, the Church believes that the devil needs to mate with its own spawn—aka Margaret—in order to breed the antichrist child. Carlita was too young, so Margaret was brought to Rome to become a vessel for Satan’s baby. Yikes!

The First Omen ending explained:

Margaret asks Father Brennan to help her get an abortion, and he agrees. But on the way to the doctor, Margaret’s stomach swells. The antichrist briefly possesses Margaret, and she passes out. She wakes up in a dungeon, strapped to a table by her former friend and mentor Cardinal Lawrence (Bill Nighy), as well as other nuns from the orphanage. They ignore her cries of pain, and Margaret gives birth to twins. The first child is a girl, and girls, apparently, cannot be the antichrist. God forbid women do anything! But the second child is a boy. Yay, it’s the antichrist!

Margaret manages to free herself, and kills Cardinal Lawrence. She nearly kills the antichrist baby, too, but she can’t bring herself to murder her own infant child. Margaret’s old roommate stabs her. The nuns take the antichrist child, set the dungeon on fire, and leave Margaret and her baby daughter to die. Luckily, Carlita shows up at the last minute to save both Margaret and the baby girl. The antichrist boy—Damien—is sent to live with an American diplomat and his wife, aka the main characters in the 1976 movie The Omen.

The First Omen ends with an “Avengers initiative”-style epilogue that takes place several years later. Margaret, Carlita, and Margaret’s toddler-age daughter all live together in a remote cabin in the mountains. Their peaceful existence is interrupted by Father Brennan, who warns Margaret that the Church knows she is alive.

“You weren’t supposed to survive, none of you were,” Brennan says. “Especially the girl. She’ll be important, Margaret.”

So what does it mean? Will there be another First Omen sequel starring Nell Tiger Free, all about Damien’s sister?

Will there be a First Omen sequel movie with Nell Tiger Free?

The First Omen 2 has not yet been officially announced, but The First Omen certainly sets up a new horror franchise starring Nell Tiger Free.

We don’t yet know, but in an interview with Free for Decider, the star hinted that she and director Arkasha Stevenson “talk about that all the time” about a possible sequel film. “No official conversations, or anything, but me and Kasha like to chat about it—what it would be, what it would be called,” Free said.

The star added that she would be more than happy to return to the franchise for more. “I love the story. I love the character. I’d jump in front of a train for Arkasha. So if it’s Arkasha, and me, and The Omen, I feel like I’d make a hundred of them.”
