James Brolin has been gracing big and small screens for decades. But, according to the actor, the trajectory of his career could’ve gone in a very different direction had he accepted the role of Superman.

On Thursday night’s (June 13) episode of Watch What Happens Live, host Andy Cohen asked Brolin if there were any roles he turned down that he later wished he hadn’t.

“That’s a big one, too. It was Superman,” Brolin admitted, referring to the role that ultimately went to Christopher Reeve.

“I had done Night of the Juggler, I’d done Amityville, I’d done Skyjacked, Westworld. And I just couldn’t see being in a red sock hanging up on wires and [them] saying, ‘That’s lunch.’ And I’m going, ‘Get me down!'” he continued. “There were just a lot of things about it I thought would change the direction of my career.”

Brolin explained that things got “real quiet” for a couple of years after he filmed the original Amityville Horror — that is, until Aaron Spelling offered him “anything” he wanted to star in the 1980s soap opera Hotel.

“I said, ‘I want to direct.’ And he said, ‘Well, let’s wait until we’re picked up next year.’ And then he called me and said, ‘OK, your year’s up. There’s three scripts. Pick one,'” Brolin recalled. “And we were shooting until 8:30 to 10:30 at night. I finished the first day at 3 in the afternoon. Everybody went to the beach and they were sure I screwed up. It was a good show.”

Still, Cohen wondered if Brolin ever regretted turning down Superman, which became a huge hit and spawned multiple sequels.

“I had to look back at it but no, I never regretted it,” Brolin said.

However, he confessed that he did have some regrets about joining Hotel instead of keeping his eyes peeled for more film opportunities.

“What I did regret, even though Hotel was a hit, was doing Hotel and not sticking with waiting for the right movie to come,” he said. “I was kind of on a run but it was slow for two years and I got itchy.”

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
