  1. Young Sheldon

Lance Barber and Iain Armitage in Young Sheldon
    Photo: CBS

Cast: Iain Armitage, Lance Barber, Zoe Perry, Raegen Revord, Montana Jordan, Annie Potts

Description: In The Big Bang Theory, we saw an adult Sheldon Cooper, a certified genius who lacks emotional intelligence and is quite particular about his likes and interests. In Young Sheldon, we see how he became that person. Sheldon grows up in a Christian household in Texas where he does not seem to fit in anywhere. His mother, Mary, father, George, and siblings, Missy and Georgie, seem to fit the Texas environment a bit more. When Sheldon starts high school at the age of nine, it opens up a new world for Sheldon. He can handle the school work, but the social life may be a bit of a challenge.

During The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon made his father seem like an uncaring alcoholic. However, the writers of the Young Sheldon decided that they wanted to change that perception, which led to George Cooper becoming a highly-regarded television dad. It is clear that he often does not understand Sheldon, but he still encourages him to do his best. He tries to push Sheldon out of his comfort zone so that he can be a strong child. The same idea goes for Missy and Georgie. He wants them all to feel like they are smart and capable children so that they can achieve great things. George has made it so that his children are usually not afraid to tell him if they need help, which is a sign that he has done a terrific job as a parent.

  2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Andre Braugher and Andy Samberg in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
    Photo: NBC

Cast: Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Terry Crews, Andre Braugher

Description: While being a police officer may seem like serious business, the 99th precinct in Brooklyn can be a bit of an odd cast of characters. There’s Jake Peralta, the childish one, Amy Santiago, the organized one, Rosa Diaz, the tough one, Charles Boyle, the slightly eccentric one, Terry Jeffords, the strong one, and more. When straight-laced Raymond Holt becomes the new Captain of the precinct, it may shake everything up. Nevertheless, despite the silliness that may occur, this team is always ready to tackle a case that needs solving.

Jake never really had a good relationship with his father, as he was always a bit of a deadbeat. Fortunately, Jake was able to find a father figure in his boss, Holt. Holt is someone that Jake always feels safe around and he is often leaning on him for advice. At first, Jake does not want to admit he sees Holt as a father figure, as he is embarrassed by that notion. However, as the series goes on, Jake starts to realize just how important Holt is to him. He becomes proud of the role Holt has in his life.

  3. This is Us

Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore and children in This is Us
    Photo: NBC

Cast: Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz

Description: In a series that takes place over several decades, we get to learn about the different lives within the Pearson family. Jack and Rebecca Pearson are parents to three children, Kevin, Kate, and Randall. Jack and Rebecca work hard to make sure their children can live happy and healthy lives. We see these children from when they are little to when they are teenagers to when they are adults with children of their own. Once they reach that stage, they each have some stressful problems of their own, both professionally and personally. As siblings, they go through ups and downs in their relationships with each other. Even so, if one of their lives gets really tough, they will have each other’s backs.

Jack Pearson is probably one of the best modern television dads. It is not easy raising three children at once, but Jack does that job successfully. Even though one child is adopted, he does not make that child feel less than the others. He supports all of his children in every way, which makes it more heartbreaking when we learn how he passes on. When his sons, Kevin and Randall, grow up, they learn how to be good fathers too. They make their mistakes, but they still want to help their children. Displaying the different generations of fatherhood is what helps this series feel special.

Description: Devi likes to think of herself as a regular teenage girl. Of course, there was the setback of her being paralyzed from the waist down for a few months after her father died, but Devi is hoping to move past that. She wants to build up her social status so that she finally understands what it is like to be cool in high school. In addition, she also wants to know what it is like to have a boyfriend and lose her virginity. All of that is on top of Devi trying to get into Princeton. With her two best friends by her side and a lot of determination, Devi likes to believe that anything is possible.

Even though this series starts after Devi’s father has died, their relationship is still an important part of the series. Losing him has become a large trauma for Devi as he was a big part of her life. She still sees him in visions and dreams, where he encourages her to do the right thing and to never give up on her dreams. While those manifestations may not be real, they still demonstrate what kind of person Devi’s father was: a kind man who always saw the best in his daughter. That is the type of father that any young person would be lucky to have.

    Watch Queer Eye On Netflix

Cast: Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown

Description: In this revival of a series with a similar name, Queer Eye is about a “Fab Five” that change a different person’s life in every episode. There is Tan, the fashion expert, Jonathan the hair and grooming expert, Antoni, the food expert, Bobby, the home design expert, and Karamo, the culture expert. This group of five interact with people from a variety of backgrounds as they use their skills to transform someone for the better. In helping fix various aspects of the lives and how they present themselves, they are also helping these people build confidence so that they can learn to love who they are and be proud of themselves.

While the main plot of the series is not about fatherhood, and episodes can go by without the mention of  it, the series still has many touching moments between fathers and their children. There are a lot of fathers that are getting made over on this show so that they can be a better father and be someone that makes their children proud. The journeys of improvement can be beautiful to watch, as the journeys show that these fathers actually care.
