To this day, Anthony Michael Hall remains Saturday Night Live‘s youngest-ever cast member. While he was only 17 years old when he starred on the long-running sketch comedy show, he was already a big Hollywood star, having appeared in National Lampoon’s Vacation, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. Despite establishing himself as an ’80s icon by the time he joined SNL in 1985, Hall looked back on his season as the “worst” one the show has ever had.

The actor, who is starring in the new movie Trigger Warning, opened up about his one-year stint on SNL in a new interview with Parade.

“Well, let me say this, to give it context, I have loved the show since the ’70s when I was a little kid,” he said. “I would have to ask my mother to stay up late to watch it, it was like a ritual. Growing up, my heroes were comedians— I loved George Carlin and Richard Pryor.”

He continued, “So the fact that I was a part of it is still incredible to me. Honesty, I feel very blessed to have been a part of it.”

However, Hall added, “It was probably the worst season in 10 years of the show, and I say that with love and respect, because to this day I still love and watch it and I see all the changes through the decades.”

SNL Season 11 marked creator Lorne Michaels‘ return to the show after a five-year hiatus. While Hall starred alongside Robert Downey Jr., Randy Quaid, Joan Cusack, the show’s first-ever Black female cast member Danitra Vance and the first openly gay cast member Terry Sweeney, the season was panned by critics and plagued with low ratings. Most of the cast was ultimately fired heading into Season 12.

Despite his short-lived tenure, Hall said he would be open to returning to SNL for the 50th anniversary celebrations next year.

“I’d be honored to, despite that minor blemish of that season,” he said. “It was an interesting season because it was Lorne’s first season back. He created the show and did it for five years, and then left it for five, and then that 11th season, everybody was scrambling.”

“But it was a blast, it was really great,” he added. “I loved all the people I got to work with.”
