Though she won an Emmy for her supporting role in The Sopranos, actress Drea de Matteo is finding more financial success in OnlyFans these days.

De Matteo is just one of a long (and growing!) list of celebrities who have joined the online subscription platform, largely known for its explicit content — although not all creators share NSFW work — in the few years since its spike in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic

Now, in the new TMZ documentary TMZ Presents: Famous & Naked, currently streaming for free on Tubi, de Matteo is opening up about her decision to join the controversial website, alongside other stars like Dan Benson (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Aubrey O’Day (Celebrity Apprentice).

“Why did I join OnlyFans?” de Matteo says in the opening moments of the documentary. “When we launched, we had, I would say, a couple hundred bucks left in the bank, I’m not kidding.”

De Matteo had been in a tough place leading up to joining the site. After being dropped by her agent and work in the industry drying up following her vaccine status, de Matteo’s house flooded, was going into foreclosure, and she couldn’t sell it.

“Did I do it out of desperation? Fuck yes I did,” she shared. “Did I think it would empower me just to be on OnlyFans? No, that wasn’t the fucking point. It empowered me to take care of my family.”

In addition to her iconic turn as Adriana La Cerva on The Sopranos, de Matteo is also known for her other television roles in Shades of Blue, Sons of Anarchy, and Desperate Housewives, but it seems that the backlash she’s received from the industry in the last few years has only made the creative control and freedom she’s found on OnlyFans all that much sweeter.

“There’s a lot of shifty shit that goes on in Hollywood,” she said. “It’s about freedom. And I don’t have to answer to fucking anybody right now.”

It’s easy to see how tempting it could be for a famous person to join the platform. With over 150,000 likes on her page, de Matteo charges a regular monthly price of $15.

TMZ Presents: Famous & Naked is now streaming on Tubi.
