All American is losing a member of its starting lineup.

Daniel Ezra, who has starred as Spencer James since the sports drama’s 2018 debut, will not be a series regular in Season 7, per Deadline. However, the outlet reports that he is slated to make future cameos on the show.

All American was renewed for Season 7 earlier this month, per The Hollywood Reporter. Meanwhile, the show’s spin-off, All American: Homecoming, was axed by The CW just weeks ahead of its Season 3 premiere on July 8. Per IMDb, Ezra appeared as Spencer in one episode of All American: Homecoming in 2022.

Fans who tuned in to All American‘s latest episode, “Victory Lap,” on Monday night (June 24) witnessed Spencer fulfilling his dream of being drafted into the NFL, per Deadline. This was followed by a time jump, which showcased Spencer playing in the Super Bowl and eventually proposing to Samantha Logan‘s Olivia Baker.

Season 6 features two more episodes that follow Spencer and Olivia prepping for their wedding.

Ezra noted in a statement to several outlets that “after making the difficult decision to leave All American, my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I’ve ever played in the manner he deserves.”

“Thanks to [showrunner] Nkechi [Okoro Carroll] and the writers, I got my wish. Season six is ‘Spencer’s goodbye.’ I’ll miss him. I’ll miss our cast and crew. I hope it’s been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him,” he added.

Okoro Carroll praised Ezra in her own statement to Deadline, in which she said that “partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer’s story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling, experience.”

“Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field,” she continued. “And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I’m grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of All American.”

Decider reached out to The CW and a representative for Ezra for comment, but did not hear back by time of publication.

All American airs new episodes on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on The CW. Seasons 1-5 are streaming on Netflix.
