Now that J.D. Vance has officially been selected as former president Donald Trump‘s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, you may be reminded of his work on Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.

Among Vance’s credits cited in Trump’s Truth Social announcement on Monday was the 2016 bestseller, which was eventually adapted into a 2020 film in which the Ohio Senator was played by Owen Asztalos and Gabriel Basso.

Directed by Ron Howard, Hillbilly Elegy also starred Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Haley Bennett, and Freida Pinto. Adams, who was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Vance’s mother, Bev, transformed into the role with the help of small prosthetics and a wig, which she fittingly named “Beaverly.”

“I always name my wigs, and that wig was ‘Beaverly’ because it was so hot it was like wearing a beaver hat on my head,” she told Entertainment Weekly at the time.

While the film was seemingly panned by critics, leading to a 25% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, Hillbilly Elegy boasts an 82% audience score on the site. Close received nods at the Academy Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Golden Globes in 2021 for her performance as Vance’s grandmother, Mamaw.

Parts of the film were shot on location in Vance’s hometown of Middletown, Ohio, as well as in Clayton, Georgia and in Atlanta.
