Members of Bachelor Nation, we’re gathered here today to celebrate The Bachelorette Season 21’s juiciest, most entertaining episode yet — until next week’s episode, that is.

Week 4 kicked off with Jenn Tran and her 12 remaining guys heading to Auckland, New Zealand for a change of scenery. The eventful episode included two high-stakes one-on-one dates with enemies Sam McKinney and Devin Strader, an unexpected twist in Sam N’s love virgin saga that must be seen to be believed, and a blast from Jenn’s past who crashes her journey asking for another chance.

From the moment Jenn sits down with host Jesse Palmer to eat an actual meal in front of cameras as he (finally!!!) explains why there’s no eating on dinner dates, The Bachelorette shakes up its typical structure, leaving viewers with a dramatic cliffhanger and a promise for more unscripted curveballs next week.

Wondering if Sam M. and Devin survived their Episode 4 one-on-one dates? Curious who snagged the group date rose? What happened to Sam N.? Who went home during Week 4 of The Bachelorette? And who Jenn’s ex is? Decider’s Season 21, Episode 4 recap has you covered.

Jenn Tran and Sam McKinneys One-On-One Date Recap: Keeping The Main Thing The Main Thing

After Jenn tells Jesse this is the first week she feels “really excited” about an engagement, she invites first impression rose recipient Sam McKinney on Episode 4’s first one-on-one date. The two head to the Auckland Sky Tower — New Zealand’s tallest building — where Sam challenges Jenn to face her massive fear of heights head-on.

When asked if she’s interested in doing the SkyJump, Jenn politely declines and opts to take in the views on the SkyWalk instead. But Sam isn’t having it. He ignores her concerns and decides they’ll both jump without asking Jenn’s thoughts. He argues that he wants to push her to conquer her fears and grow, but Jenn sees his insistence and disregard for her emotions as a red flag. She tells cameras that Sam needs to do a better job reading her, and for a moment it seems that Devin and the boys’ dreams for Sam to screw up his one-on-one will come true. As the two stand 630 feet above the ground, however, Jenn breaks down in tears and Sam steps up, hugs her, and tells her it’s OK to skip the jump. In the end, Jenn takes the leap for herself and the two find themselves back on solid ground.

At dinner, Jenn looks for Sam to open up more and prove that their relationship isn’t purely physical. Sam steps up to the challenge, sharing that he was engaged to someone he thought he was going to spend forever with only to learn that she cheated on him, which fully derailed his dreams for lasting love and a future family. He tells Jenn, “There’s no road I will not travel, no bridge I will not cross for people I really love,” and suddenly, all her fears are quelled.

Did Sam M. Get The Rose? Yep. Looks like Sam M. will be trying to keep the main thing the main thing for another week. Not only is Jenn falling for Sam M. but she said he’s someone with whom she can really see a future.

The Bachelorette‘s Group Date Recap: Sam N.‘s Inner Dog Comes Out

For the only group date of the week, Jenn invites 10 guys (Spencer, Marcus, Grant, John M., Austin, Jonathon, Dylan, Thomas, Jeremy, and Sam N.) to impress her on the field with a game of rugby. After watching the Māori Haka, a ceremonial dance used before games in Māori culture to display pride, strength and unity, the guys get down to business in hopes of impressing Jenn and winning The Bachelorette‘s Rugby Royale.

Marcus leaves the strongest impression on the field, but Sam N. is the guy everyone’s talking about. Why? In his own words, “THE CRAZINESS IS COMING OUT!” While Week 3’s Love Down Under competition was challenging for the love virgin, Sam N. pumps himself up ahead of Week 4’s group date and sets forth on a mission to manifest a rose. From writing “Jenn’s Husband” on the back of his jersey to carrying her around the field, it’s clear Sam N. is playing his own game, and it doesn’t take long for fellow contestants to grow annoyed by his “bad bitch energy.” Going into the cocktail party, Sam N. refuses to take his game face off and vows to have his first kiss with his wife.

As the night goes on, several guys confront Sam, asking him to check his “toxic” attitude. Nevertheless, chaos reigns and Sam N., his newfound arrogance, and his leather (not denim!) jacket interrupt Thomas N’s time with Jenn to declare: “I really want to take our relationship to the next step.” He asks to kiss her and is instantly brought back down to Earth when Jenn replies, “I admire how open you are and how vulnerable you’ve been…but I want to be honest with you. I just don’t know if I can see us getting there…” Jenn walks a confused Sam N. out and he tells cameras he feels like “the fool of the century.” (We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Please don’t go on The Bachelorette if you’re a “love virgin!”

Who Got The Group Date Rose? With Sam N. out of the picture, Jenn gives the rose to Marcus, who she shared an emotional moment with following his rugby injury. PA student Jenn sprung into action and whipped out her stethoscope to give Marcus a second opinion. He admitted that he puts a lot of pressure on himself to not be perceived as weak, and she reminded him that he doesn’t always have to be strong for her.

Jenn Tran and Devin Strader‘s One-On-One Date Recap: What Makes Devin and Jenn Tick

After Sam M.’s successful one-on-one date, he and Devin unsuccessfully try to work out their differences (again!) only for them to conclude that they don’t respect each other, they’re here for Jenn, and time will tell which one of them is in the right (again!).

Following the group date, Devin meets Jenn for a special day spent learning more about Māori culture. Jenn, who’s Vietnamese and Buddhist, explains that her spirituality, morals, and values are important to her and something she wants to incorporate into her own family down the line. Over the past several years especially, the Bachelor franchise has been making efforts to tell more diverse stories on-screen, and dates like this — which invite contestants and primetime ABC viewers to learn about cultures and traditions they might not be familiar with or otherwise exposed to — are real wins.

After Devin shares that he comes from many different places, his dad immigrated from Mexico, and he found a home in Houston, Texas, he gives a special shoutout to the “mountain” in his life, his mother, which heavily resonates with Jenn. She says both of her parents immigrated from Vietnam and though she struggled with being different growing up, she’s learned to love and embrace her family’s culture. At dinner later that night, Devin opens up even more, sharing that — like Jenn — he “grew up in a tough environment” and had issues with his dad growing up. He explains that his mom got pregnant from a “casual fling” and dropped out of college to take care of him. His dad was never really around, but before he fully understood all the sacrifices his mom made for him and the love she had for him, he used to idolize his absentee father. “She never wavered once,” Devin says. “No matter how much I lashed out.” Jenn appreciates Devin’s vulnerability and tells him they’re far more similar than she originally thought. She shares more of her story with him, and he tells her he’s falling for her. (Squeal!)

Did Devin Get The Rose? He did indeed. Jenn says she’s never felt appreciated in the way that Devin makes her feel and he’s someone would could very much be her future fiancé. Devin accepts the rose “without a doubt” and says he wants it to be him and Jenn at the end “so bad.”

Who Is Jenn’s Ex On The Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 4? Meet Matthew Rossi

For the past week, Bachelorette fans have been wondering who exactly crashes Jenn’s season, if he asks to join the show, and if Jenn says yes. Well, we finally have some answers! Ahead of the cocktail party, Jesse Palmer speaks directly to the camera from a hotel lobby to explain, “A guy from Jenn’s past has reached out to one of our producers — it’s obviously not normal, it’s very unexpected. I’m told that he’s flown himself halfway around the world to New Zealand on his own dime just to have a conversation with Jenn. His flight landed an hour ago, he’s on his way to the hotel now. I’m sure he’s exhausted. My plan is to meet him here at hotel, talk to him, and find out what it is he wants to say to Jenn.”

In walks Matthew Rossi, a 27-year-old insurance executive from Atlanta, Georgia. He tells Jesse that he and Jenn dated about three years ago for about three or four months, and since then they’ve found themselves back together throughout the past few years. Jesse sends him over to Jenn’s filming location to make his case, and Jenn is jenn-uinely baffled by the sight of him.

When asked what he’s doing there, Matt explains that he was looking forward to going to Columbia with her, and he went for a few days but it wasn’t the same without her, so he blew off two weddings and flew to see her. HMM… Jenn tells cameras his presence is “a really big shock” and clarifies that Matt isn’t the toxic ex she’s always referencing. Matt tells her he has strong feelings for her and wants another chance to show her how much she means to him. Jenn says she thought they were just friends and the confession feels like it’s coming out of nowhere. HMM!!! Jenn takes a beat to process Matt’s love confession and proposition, plus the impact that her inviting him on the show would have on her remaining guys. So what does she choose?!

Who Goes Home During Season 21, Episode 4?

It’s not often the franchise leaves Bachelor Nation on a cliffhanger, but when it does happen, it’s always setting up something major. In Season 21, Episode 4, Sam N. was the only man to leave, because the episode cut off ahead of the Week 4 rose ceremony. Instead, we ended with Jenn contemplating her next move with Matt, and judging from the Episode 5 teaser, she’s planning on keeping him around — or at least inviting him to the rose ceremony and giving the guys a good scare.

“Next week, Jenn’s past collides with her future,” Jesse Palmer explains in a voiceover during the end credits preview clip. Jenn chimes in to explain that though the decision she’s about to make could change everything she has to follow her own journey. We see several of her original contestants upset, and before the teaser concludes, she says, “I see a future where I end up alone.” Uh oh!

See you next week, Bachelor Nation! New episodes of The Bachelorette Season 21 premiere Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC with next-day streaming on Hulu. Be sure to read Decider’s pre-premiere interview with Jenn Tran for more exciting tidbits.
