‘I Saw the TV Glow’

When I say I Saw the TV Glownow available to buy and rent on demand—left me absolutely gutted, I mean that as a compliment. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, this surreal horror-adjacent drama stars Justice Smith as Owen, a lonely, isolated kid growing up in the ’90s. When Owen meets a cool alternative girl named Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), she introduces him to a supernatural TV show called The Pink Opaque. As the years pass, it becomes clear that Owen doesn’t feel like the man society tells him he must be. Reality begins to distort, and Owen starts to question whether The Pink Opaque was more than just a TV show. It’s a moody, bizarre, and at times horrific psychological journey that speaks to the trans experience, and it’s easily one of the best films of 2024.

‘Kinsey’

In honor of Pride Month, we should celebrate Alfred Kinsey, pioneer sexologist and creator of the Kinsey Scale. The best way to do that is by watching the film Kinsey, which tells the story of the scientist’s life and career. Liam Neeson stars as Kinsey, who started as a biologist before his fascination and knowledge of sexuality caused him to... Read more

‘Out Of Darkness’

Earth. 45,000 years ago. There's no shelter, no power, and ... gasp ... NO WIFI!! (I can already hear you screaming.) The film follows a small band of paleolithic-era humans who have crossed violent seas and trudged across intimidatingly vast... Read more

‘The Lion King’ (1994)

30 years ago this week, The Lion King hit theaters. It's the fifth film in the 10 year Disney Renaissance period, and for my money, the best one (it might even be my favorite Disney movie, period, but don't quote me on that!). The Lion King has all the hallmarks of a great Disney Renaissance movie: a banging score (Hans Zimmer did not come to... ‘Vanity Fair’ (2018)

I'm not sure why I slept so long on Prime Video's 2018 adaptation of Vanity Fair, but I'm glad I got around to binging it eventually. House of the Dragon standout Olivia Cooke stars as the indelible Becky Sharp, William Makepiece Thackeray's (Michael Palin) ambitious anti-heroine. Becky is the orphaned daughter of an artist and an opera singer who ... Read more

‘Mr. Harrigan’s Phone’

This 2022 Netflix adaptation of a Stephen King novella flew under the radar when it came out, and now it has the distinction of being one of the late, great Donald Sutherland’s final movie roles, after the actor died at the age of 88 last week. Written and directed by John Lee Hancock, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone tells the story of a young boy named... Read more
