‘Ocean’s 8’
One is Sandra Bullock, bringing her entire galaxy of star wattage to the role of Debbie Ocean, sister to George Clooney’s Danny and constitutionally incapable of letting a job pass or a grudge die. Two is Cate Blanchett as Lou, Debbie’s right hand and a cool and collected right hand at that. Three is Mindy Kaling as Amita, a jewler eager to get out from under her family’s thumb and easily captivated by sparkly pretty things and people. Four is Helena Bonham Carter, snagging the “and” credit away from Anne Hathaway somehow for her performance as nervous and nearly ruined fashion designer Rose Weil. Five is Sarah Paulson as Tammy, a skilled fence living out in the suburbs with all the other tidy white fences, har har. Six is Awkwafina as Constance, three-card-monte confidence chick and pickpocket, who bookended her summer by co-starring in the two coolest casts of the year. Seven is Rihanna as Nine-Ball, the group’s hacker, chillness personified, and dazzling fashion plate in waiting. Eight should be a surprise, but she’s totally not if you saw either trailer or any of the studio-released artwork. It’s Anne Hathaway. And the movie takes its sweet time acknowledging that you know they know you know.
The whole endeavor is a hell of a lot of fun, and I think we all hope its financial success can lure Steven Soderbergh back into the director’s chair for Ocean’s 9.
