‘Presumed Innocent’
When you hear the words “Presumed Innocent,” you may think of Scott Turow’s bestselling 1987 novel or the 1990 film starring Harrison Ford, but Apple TV+ recently premiered a fresh spin on the familiar story. Presumed Innocent’s latest adaptation is an eight-episode limited series from David E. Kelley and executive producer J.J. Abrams. Starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, the legal thriller investigates the devastating murder of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), the colleague and mistress of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Gyllenhaal), who becomes the chief suspect in the case. As Rusty struggles to defend himself, hold his family together, and grieve the loss of his loved one, Presumed Innocent throws out unexpected twists that will leave characters and viewers alike questioning everything they thought they knew. Presumed Innocent‘s core storyline and characters remain in-tact, with Ruth Negga, O-T Fagbenle, Peter Sarsgaard (Gyllenhaal’s IRL brother-in-law), and Bill Camp delivering powerful performances. But the series makes a concrete effort to shake up the original, which means everyone has the opportunity to be surprised by the end.
