‘Thelma’

At the age of 94, Academy Award-nominated actor June Squibb finally has her first leading role with Thelma. And what a leading role it is! Written and directed by Josh Margolin, this quirky little indie comedy that first premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January stars Squibb as an elderly woman who gets scammed out of $10,000 by a criminal who pretends to be her grandson on the phone. Rather than accepting this injustice, Thelma takes it upon herself to get her damn money back—much to the chagrin of her overprotective daughter and son-in-law (Parker Posey and Clark Gregg) and her doting grandson (Fred Hechinger). Squibb equal parts hilarious and heart-breaking in this feel-good tale about the autonomy of older folks, and the necessity of asking for help. Plus, it’s a beautiful and warm final performance for the late Richard Roundtree. RIP.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4

Hulu's hit murder mystery series is back with a new season of hijinks, except this time, the murder has hit dangerously close to home. Only Murders in the Building Season 3 ended with a major cliffhanger when (spoiler alert!) Jane Lynch's Sazz Pataki was murdered in Charles' apartment in a case of mistaken identity. Season 4 picks up on that same... Read more

‘Rebel Ridge’

I'm not a huge action thriller person, but even I could appreciate the delicate artistry of Rebel Ridge, a gorgeous new Netflix movie that began streaming on Friday. Written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge has all the best elements of '80s and '90s action flicks: It’s grounded, efficient, and just a little bit cheesy. With practical ... Read more

‘My Cousin Vinny’

There is never a bad time to watch My Cousin Vinny. The Joe Pesci comedy is laugh-out-loud funny, with the leading man delivering a charmingly kooky performance as a lawyer trying his very best to win his cousin's murder case (despite making six attempts to pass the bar). With some memorable performances from Fred Gwynne, a young Ralph Maccio (who ... Read more

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’

Paul Blart: Mall Cop is my favorite Happy Madison film (sans Adam Sandler), and lucky for me, the 2009 comedy began streaming on Netflix at the beginning of the month. Aspiring police officer Paul Blart's (Kevin James) mundane duties as mall cop at the West Orange Pavilion Mall are amped up when he must save the day from a gang that takes over the... Read more
