Meloni and Erdogan discuss NATO’s southern priorities

The meeting in Washington highlighted Ankara’s growing influence in North Africa and underscored the strategic partnership with Rome. Both countries committed to strengthening political, economic, and commercial ties, with a focus on migration and regional conflict resolution, demonstrating a shared dedication to enhancing collaboration within the alliance

Strategic NATO talks. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Wednesday for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, D.C.

  • During the meeting, the leaders discussed important topics related to the NATO summit, highlighting the importance of increased coordination with the alliance, particularly regarding the southern flank.
  • Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also used the opportunity in Washington to advocate for NATO to prioritise the southern flank and express support for appointing a NATO special envoy for the southern neighbourhood.

Mediterranean power play? This focus aligns with Italy’s Mattei Plan, which aims to promote economic development and stability in Africa and reaffirm Italy’s position as a leading partner in the region.

  • In this context, it is noteworthy to mention that Turkey has been increasing its influence in North Africa through initiatives such as a maritime agreement with Morocco, improved bilateral relations with Algeria and Egypt, and ongoing military involvement in Libya, all of which intersect with Italy’s areas of interest under the Mattei Plan.
  • This meeting also follows PM Meloni’s visit to Ankara in January, during which crucial geopolitical issues were discussed. Despite differing stances, the ongoing discussions highlight the strategic alliance between Rome and Ankara within NATO and the Mediterranean region.

Bilateral resolve reinforced. PM Meloni and President Erdogan discussed important global issues and committed to strengthening their countries’ political, economic, and commercial ties. Both leaders emphasised the significance of working together on migration.

  • They agreed on the importance of ongoing cooperation and recognised opportunities for further progress in their bilateral relationship through future initiatives.
  • President Erdogan highlighted Turkey’s active role in seeking resolutions to regional conflicts and urged international efforts towards maintaining peace.
  • This meeting demonstrates a strong dedication from both nations to enhance their collaboration in various areas, in line with broader NATO goals and in addressing global geopolitical challenges.
