Co-creating Scandinavian cities

Om os

Co-creating Scandinavian cities Aarhus | Copenhagen | Stockholm | Malmö | Göteborg | Oslo We believe that, through strong team spirit, knowledge sharing and sound cooperation, we can create and develop Scandinavian cities. We familiarise ourselves with the place, consider the needs of society and maintain ongoing dialogue with the client, the users and our partners. We work across national borders and utilise each other’s competencies to jointly create a buildable, usable, sustainable and aesthetic project that creates value for the client and the users. We work in all architectural scales, from interiors to construction architecture to urban planning, and have concentrated our professional skills in seven segments: Living, Working, Learning, Healthcare, Urban, Culture and Infrastructure. Together, these seven segments form the foundation of the modern Scandinavian city. Arkitema was founded in Aarhus in 1969. Today, the practice is one of Scandinavia’s biggest architectural firms with a staff of 600 employees, and has been a part of COWI since 2019.

Our Dutch colleague Sophie Dikmans has worked at our Norwegian office in Oslo for two years. Here, she has primarily focused on health projects as part of our experienced team. Even though it was a bit of a coincidence that Sophie ended up in Oslo and Arkitema, she is thrilled to be living in Norway, learning the Norwegian language, culture, and architectural approach. In an interview with the largest Dutch architectural publisher, Architectenweb, Sophie tells her story and what she has learned from working at an architectural practice in another country. This is an insightful piece about following your dreams and embarking on new adventures in unknown territory. We are very pleased to have Sophie as part of our team and are impressed by both her professional and personal mindset, which is inspiring to many. She has embraced Norwegian traditions and is an integrated part of the team. At Arkitema, we are always open to new input and eager to learn new perspectives, which Sophie and several other expats at our offices provide us. Thank you for that! The result is a revitalized forecourt for thousands of daily commuters.  For years, the area in front of Hellerup Station, located near Copenhagen, was characterized by an uneven array of buildings and formed a visual and physical barrier between the city and the station.  Today Hellerup Station offers a harmony of comfort, convenience, and safety.  It integrates bicycle parking, green elements, and several spaces for staying open the station to its surroundings.  The project was realized in collaboration with DSB Ejendomsudvikling A/S and engineers from COWI. It took only 13 months to realise, containing several innovative initiatives - both in construction and among residents. ‘Engdraget’ is a group of two-storey terrace houses situated outside the Danish city of Slagelse. Timber cassettes from Scandi Byg were selected, resulting in an efficient construction. Timber cassettes offer more than sealing the outside of a building. They can be installed with a small crew, don't need scaffolding, and reduce the number of on-site workers.  Furthermore, Engdraget is more than a housing project built at record speed - it's also a whole new way of living.  Before new residents move in, they are asked to share their interests and skills, such as caring for green spaces, snow removal, and more.   This means, among other things, that residents take responsibility and have a say in what happens in the neighbourhood.  The project is realised in collaboration with Slagelse Boligselskab, FJERRING A/S, Rådgivende Ingeniører og Scandi Byg.    Photo credit: Scandibyg

On Saturday a milestone in the story of the Copenhagen Metro was reached. The M4 Metro line opened in pomp and circumstance at Mozart's Square one of the new stations on the line connecting the "Sydhavnen" area to the metro network. As part of the COWI/SYSTRA JV, Arkitema and Gottlieb Paludan Architects have designed the five new underground stations opening on the line. Here we have worked together with five artists who each have created beautiful artwork for an individual new station on the line. The first outlines of the project were made nine years ago, and it is an absolute pleasure to see all the hard work done since then come to life. We are proud of the final result and are looking forward to seeing the metro evolve into an integral part of the vast communal infrastructure of Copenhagen. Congratulations to all present and future users of this new metro line and of course to Metroselskabet & Hovedstadens Letbane – thank you for a great co-creation project! A spectacular pavilion and cultural gem designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando in the Danish town of Allinge! Our colleague, Poul Schulein, Partner and Business Area Manager at Arkitema advises the client, Estate Ferlov Mancoba, and coordinates the work with the renowned Japanese architect. The architectural design will exhibit sculptures of Sonja Ferlov, one of the most important Danish artists of the modern age.  “Combining Sonja Ferlov's distinctive art with Tadao Ando's minimalist architecture, this project creates a rich harmony. Nature is integral, as the structure and sculptures interact beautifully with the striking sea and rocky landscape," shares Poul Schülein,  According to the plan the museum is expected to be realised in 2030. From our modeling workshop to reality! Soon you can attend the opening of the upcoming M4 Metro line to Sydhavn - a developing neighbourhood in Copenhagen.     It will become a next-level passenger experience, and Arkitema has assisted The Copenhagen Metro and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail by creating scale models of the stations as a working tool during the development of the five stations on the line, Our colleague Francisco Pires, Model Builder at Arkitema has helped visualize the station spaces in classic and 3D models.  “It was one of those models where we used all the techniques and materials available in our modeling workshop. There was 3D printing, laser cutting, electric circuits, epoxy resin... We did it all, and it has been a very inspiring process being part of,” explains Francisco Pires.  Arkitema has been designing the five stations on the line, together with Metroselskabet and as part of the COWI/SYSTRA-JV, in collaboration with architect colleagues from Gottlieb Paludan Architects.  We look forward to exploring this remarkable creation when the new metro line M4 opens on Saturday 22 June 2024!

The grass must take hold over the summer when our new community building will soon open! "Lysningen," located in the Danish city of Viborg, will house school, sports, and cultural facilities for children and citizens within the Municipality. Utilizing timber as the primary material will infuse character and identity into Lysningen, while fostering light and welcoming architecture for the citizens. In a team consisting of Viborg Municipality, engineering firm OJ Rådgivende Ingeniører, now Sweco, and COWI, Arkitema is a full-service consultant. Read more about our architectural design here:

Scale models in architecture are valuable for visualizing our designs. Among our talented colleagues, Francisco Pires, Model Builder at Arkitema, has contributed to visualizing the 'Sophie Radich School' located in the Norwegian city of Lillestrøm. "It's satisfying working with wood, and for the Sophie Radich School, or as we internally refer to it, the 'Red School,' we utilized its advantages by conducting several tests on the laser to achieve facade details on a very thin layer of plywood. And it's rewarding when you crack the code, find the right technique, and achieve the desired result," adds Francisco. Since 2023, the Sophie Radich School has provided well-run educational facilities for both students and teachers in Lillestrøm, fostering future-oriented learning.
