The life (and death) of the suburban lawn ⛳️🌾 David Hedges-Gower is perplexed by our attitude to lawns – those manicured, perma-green outdoor carpets that demand so much attention. “A lawn is just a lump of grass really,” says Hedges-Gower, who is chairman of the Lawn Association, a UK-based organisation pushing for more informed lawn management. “Sure, spending time on a lawn is good for our mental well-being. But some people just get obsessive about it.” This collective obsession seems to be spreading, which is why some 70% of urban green areas globally are now lawns. This is a problem, some suggest. Does history repeat itself? 🔗💡 In the 1990s two scholars proposed that the broad strokes of Western history can be understood as a series of cycles switching between states of stability and turmoil and spanning roughly 80 years each. According to their theory, we may be heading towards the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one – meaning that we will enter a period of crisis and global re-ordering. We Need To Keep People As Healthy As Possible For As Long As Possible "The postulate ‘We need to feel good to do good’ is behind this way of thought. In this logic, we need to become healthy first, to be able to do good, including achieving sustainability in healthcare. This premise for sustainability requires comprehensive political and ethical discussions. I believe that the health service’s most important task is to keep the population healthy and self-reliant for as long as possible. And that requires significant investments in prevention." All carrot and no stick 🥕 Can you imagine a future where we have eliminated pain and suffering? Transhumanist philosopher David Pearce can. He envisions a world filled with varying sizes of carrots, and no sticks. The nature of suffering is something that has always puzzled us. One only needs to take a quick glance at the art, religions, and philosophies of human history to see we have long tried to make sense of it. Take Christianity, a religion that centres pain and sin. Suffering “produces perseverance”, according to the Bible. It’s also one of Buddhism’s four noble truths, translated as Dukkha, something which can only be alleviated by the repression of desire. While we certainly can reduce instances of suffering, everyone seems to agree that it is innate to the human condition and something we should learn to accept. Well, not everyone. If you ask the philosopher David Pearce, we have barely scratched the surface of our understanding of suffering. Not only that, he believes its elimination is also within our reach. What is the value of a human life? 💸 An impossible question that, depending on who you direct it at, can have some surprisingly concrete answers. Ask a healthcare economist and they might tell you that the so-called ‘value of a statistical life year’ is an important point of reference used by planners to quantify our collective willingness to pay for health measures that prolong lives. In Asia and Europe, that willingness translates to around 5 times GDP/capita, while citizens in North America are prepared to invest almost 7 times GDP/capita for each life year gained. Although varying greatly between regions, the median international pain point for keeping a human being alive for one year is calculated to precisely 164,409 Euros. The dismal science indeed.
