⚡ KOMPAS VC Partner Sebastian Peck has made headlines in FT Adviser, discussing a latest development by the new Labour government that is set to transform investment in the #UK economy. In a dynamic start to their tenure, the UK government has rolled out a £7.3bn national wealth fund aimed at decarbonising Britain's heavy industries. This state-backed initiative is set to inspire investor confidence and funnel over £20bn into low-carbon projects, propelling the UK's journey towards #netzero. 🌍 Why should you care? The fund’s innovative approach of combining debt and equity financing is a game-changer for climate tech start-ups that need substantial investment in fixed assets. Traditional VCs often fall short in underwriting these capital-heavy investments, making this fund a critical new player in the field. Don’t miss Sebastian Peck’s deep dive into how this shift impacts the #VC industry, the importance of thorough risk analysis, and what it means for hardware start-ups ⤵ https://lnkd.in/eg38jQDk #backingthebuildersoftomorrow #kompasvc #ftadviser #ukgovernment #netzero #heavyindustries #nationalwealthfund

💥 The chemical industry, a $6 trillion sector and the third-largest industrial emitter of CO2 due to its high energy consumption, influences every facet of our daily lives—from our food and clothing to electronics. With 90% reliant on oil or natural gas as feedstock, it poses a formidable challenge for decarbonization. This is why we are very excited to have invested in Again —a biotech firm that captures and transforms CO2 into valuable chemicals, reducing dependence on traditional feedstocks and converting them into recyclable plastics. Founded in 2021 by Maximilian Kufner and Dr. Torbjørn Ølshøj Jensen, Again builds on pioneering research led by Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#MIT) and Stanford University. Again 's scalable technology, demonstrated at their Copenhagen plant, produces carbon-negative chemicals efficiently and cost-competitively, marking our 🥇 first Danish investment. With support from HV Capital, GV (Google Ventures), and existing investors, ACME Capital, Atlantic Labs, and Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (#EIFO), Again is expanding globally, enhancing sustainability across industries like adhesives and plastics. Learn more about Again 's innovative approach ⤵ https://lnkd.in/grvbYeQt Sebastian Peck #kompasvc #backingthebuildersoftomorrow #chemicals

🚨 We are very excited to announce our investment in Again , which has developed a breakthrough technology to produce carbon-negative base chemicals. We are co-investing alongside HV Capital and GV (Google Ventures), who co-led the $43m funding round, Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, and existing investors Atlantic Labs, ACME Capital. Heartfelt congratulations to co-founders Dr. Torbjørn Ølshøj Jensen and Maximilian Kufner and their terrific team, as well as Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen. The funding marks another major milestone for the company following their $10m Seed round last year and securing major offtake agreements with leading chemical producers and distributors. Again combines CO2 captured from flue gases, hydrogen and a biological feedstock to produce green base chemicals like acetate through a patented fermentation process. By capturing CO2 and using minimal energy, the company produces carbon-negative base chemicals at a highly competitive cost. Again ’s technology builds on groundbreaking research led by Professor Alex Toftgaard Nielsen at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability at DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (#MIT) and Stanford University. Sebastian Peck, who led the deal for KOMPAS VC, notes that “our investment in Again is perfectly aligned with our focus on decarbonising hard-to-abate industries. The chemical industry is a $6 trillion industry and the third-largest industrial subsector in terms of its CO2 emissions due to its significant energy consumption. It touches every aspect of our lives from the food we eat to the clothes we wear and the electronics we use. Currently, 90% of the chemical industry relies on oil or natural gas as a feedstock, making this sector notoriously hard to decarbonize. Identifying alternative, non-oil-based sources to feed the chemical sector is therefore critical.” This latest funding round will support the company’s expansion in Europe and the US, for which it partners with leading global industry players. Again ’s first carbon utilization plant in Denmark, already operational, converts up to one ton of CO2 per day into essential chemicals like acetate, vital for industries such as adhesives, plastics, and cosmetics. We look forward to working with the stellar Again team and our co-investors Jan Miczaika, Christian Tang-Jespersen, Daniel Niemi, Andy Wheeler and Maxi Pethö-Schramm to build the world’s leading green chemical producer. What a week at London Climate Week! Victoria Burrows and Sebastian Peck dove right into the action, engaging with visionary founders, co-investors, and the vibrant climate tech community. ⚡ The Breakthrough Energy Summit stood out with luminaries like Bill Gates, Vinod Khosla, John Doerr, and HRH the Prince of Wales rallying us on the urgency and scale needed in our collective journey towards emissions reduction. A key takeaway was that ultimately, our success as investors and entrepreneurs will be measured by scale, and the amount of emissions abated is the ultimate measure. Accordingly, many discussions focused on funding first-of-a-kind factories (#FOAK), which are crucial steps in the scaling journey and maturation process of climate tech startups. Thank you, Brian Mayers, and the whole Breakthrough Energy Ventures team for hosting us. 🌆 We also teamed up with Stephen Murphy and the ClimateImpact team for insightful roundtable discussions on the 'Future of Cities' and the evolving landscape of climate tech investment. These discussions underscored the importance of global partnerships in driving meaningful change. Key insights included the barriers to initiating solutions and the necessity of an insurance scheme for startups, particularly with new materials. Thank you also to Anthony Hobley and Howden, who hosted their annual De-risking Summit featuring a set of insightful discussions at Mansion House. The insurance industry is undergoing a significant reassessment of climate-induced risks, and it was fascinating to hear how industry representatives navigate these challenges. Another thank you goes to Goals House, Christophe Defert, and HSBC Innovation Banking for inviting us to a discussion about AI as a key enabler of the energy transition, featuring Adam Elman, Sustainability Lead at Google. We look forward to partnering with Goals House at New York Climate Week. Last but not least, we would like to thank our very own (and indefatigable) Victoria Burrows, who did a wonderful job helping us navigate the myriad events of the week. She also hosted her highly successful "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" side event with our friends at Arup, featuring our portfolio companies Material Evolution and Vizcab. Thanks also to our friends at SET Ventures, Octopus Ventures, Blume Equity, ETF Partners, General Atlantic, 2150, Eka Ventures, and Sustainable Future Ventures for hosting us for dinner and drinks. We left London feeling reassured that, notwithstanding political headwinds, the momentum behind the transition to a #netzero economy remains strong. At KOMPAS VC, we are bullish on net zero and continue to deploy our capital to reduce emissions, increase productivity, and mitigate climate-induced cyber and geopolitical risks for the #manufacturing industry and the #builtenvironment. #backingthebuildersoftomorrow #kompasvc
