🗣️"We are a small USA opera company, founded in 2012 in a small but special town -- Williamsburg, in the state of Virginia, USA. It is a place that had no opera company before us (the closest is the Virginia Opera which performs in Norfolk and in Richmond, each an hour's drive away). We have been performing two fully-staged operas a year since 2012, and since 2017 have been performing each opera 3 times, in the intimate Kimball Theatre (400 seats). We take pride in featuring exceptional singers for all roles, and in creating full dramatic productions with integrity and beauty even though our resources are very limited. Operabase is an excellent product, and its development over the last few years has been impressive. We have explored the casting tool and other professional features of Operabase, and we consider them very useful indeed for houses with a larger seasonal offering. In the last couple of years, we have have enjoyed promotional rates of Operabase, which made it possible for us to become members as an organization. We like the way we can feature our organization and post details about upcoming and past productions, and list the roles performed by our artists (singers and creative team). Operabase provides us with an excellent way to present our profile to others in the industry and to serious opera fans world-wide. Our budget is very tight indeed and is never certain (since it depends on the individual good will of individual donors). Most by far goes to the actual productions -- primarily to pay the singers, musicians, and creative team, with rent for the performing and rehearsing spaces a distant second. Our spending on general publicity and the company image is very low indeed -- we spend a great deal of effort but very little money. A pro membership in Operabase is among our larger indulgences, and is well worth the cost." Spotlight On - Melissa Zgouridi 🌟 Brazilian-American mezzo-soprano Melissa Zgouridi has been lauded by audiences and critics alike for her “sublime, sparkling bronze voice” (Forumopera.com ) and “passionate interpretation” (Das Opernglas). From 2021 to 2023, Melissa was in the ensemble of the Saarländisches Staatstheater, where she quickly became "a crowd favorite" (Opus Kulturmagazin) through her dynamic performances of Carmen (Carmen), Erda (Das Rheingold), Ruggiero (Alcina), and Prinz Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus). Melissa's 2023/2024 season highlights include Erda in Peter Konwitschny's new production of "Das Rheingold" at Theater Dortmund, 3rd Weird Sister in Pascal Dusapin’s “Macbeth Underworld” at the Opéra-Comique - Théâtre National , Prinz Orlofsky in “Die Fledermaus” at Stadttheater Klagenfurt and covering Suzuki in Anthony Minghella's "Madama Butterfly” at the Metropolitan Opera. Melissa opens her 2024/2025 season as Carmen in a new production for Theater Hagen. She will make her role debut as Erda in “Siegfried” at the Saarländisches Staatstheater before returning to Theater Dortmund as Erda in both "Das Rheingold" and "Siegfried" in their presentation of the full Ring cycle. In May 2025, Melissa will perform Erda in a concert version of “Siegfried” at the Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles. Spotlight On - Nicolò Balducci🌟 Italian countertenor Nicolò Balducci has been garnering critical acclaim for his “crystalline timbre” and “enviable coloratura athleticism” (Gramophone Magazine). In 2022, he claimed 1st Prize at the Renata Tebaldi Competition, among other accolades, and made waves as a semifinalist at the 2023 Operalia Competition. The 2023/24 season was a milestone for Nicolò, with role debuts as Gilbert in Roméo et Juliette by Zingarelli and Imeneo in Vivaldi’s Gloria e Imeneo, both at Château de Versailles. An exclusive artist with BIS RECORDS AB, he released his first solo CD, “Castrapolis – Neapolitan Cantatas and Arias,” in 2022, followed by “Amore Dolore – Countertenor Arias” in March 2023. A third CD, featuring songs by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, is expected next month. Looking ahead to the 24/25 season, Nicolò is set to make several significant role and house debuts across Europe. This week, he will take the stage as Ulisse in Ifigenia in Aulide at the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival. Spotlight On - Antonio Mandrillo🌟 The Italian tenor, began his journey at the Conservatorio di Musica Arrigo Boito di Parma and further refined his vocal technique under the guidance of Maestro Ercole D'Aleo. His talent has been recognised through several prestigious awards, including the "Voce d'Angelo" competition in Parma and the "Best Tenor" prize from the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation at the "Paolo and Etta Limiti Competition." Since his debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at Teatro Regio di Parma, he has since performed in leading productions such as Gianni Schicchi in Milan, La Cenerentola at the Festival della Valle d'Itria, and La traviata at Teatro Comunale di Modena, among others. His upcoming performances include Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi at Haydn Foundation of Bolzano and Trento and Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Teatro Comunale di Modena.
