Imagine the costs of having to postpone a cable lay operation by just a few days because a route was not properly cleared of debris and old cables... Thorough route clearance is essential to reduce the risk of damage during installation. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 (𝗥𝗖) was developed because it was recognised that some of the age-old methods of towing a grapnel, to locate and clear out-of-service cables, are no longer sufficiently reliable as cables have been increasingly buried deeper in the seabed. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? To lay and bury a brand new cable, we have to clear the route of older cables that may not have been buried so deep. If we don’t remove them, they’ll damage the new cables and the equipment used to bury them. Yet, many offshore developers are still using 𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗴𝗼 to try and snag these deeply buried cables. Different and more efficient methods are available, but locating and removing redundant cables appears a dark art to many. Yet knowledge and applied science can be far more reliable than just scratching in the dirt with a grapnel. 💡𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹: ◽️ explain why cable, wire, and chain debris must be cleared from a new cable corridor ◽️show what information can be obtained about existing and disused cables before we start ◽️discuss the correct tools used to locate buried cables and debris ◽️identify the most appropriate methods to expose and remove these barriers ◽️discuss potential consequences if old cables are allowed to remain in place ◽️show how you can achieve your route clearance goal in an efficient manner, and the pitfalls that can be avoided with the correct approach ◽️show you why formal agreements are needed to cross existing cables and pipelines or to bring your tools close to an asset owned by someone else, together with the consequences if a third-party in-service cable or pipeline is damaged by your route clearance operation. The course covers boulder clearance equipment and techniques, which can cut a path for a new cable through seafloors strewn with natural obstacles. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝟱𝟬𝟬-𝗸𝗴 𝗯𝗼𝗺𝗯, 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗼, 𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲! While an offshore developer may be able to delegate the UXO neutralisation to a specialist contractor, package team members need to understand the various stages of the process, such as desktop studies, geophysical surveys, and specific inspections of possible munitions to determine the risks they pose. As with general offshore construction, the developer, or license holder, is ultimately responsible for safety at the site, so someone in the project management team must clearly understand what’s involved. Accidentally finding unexploded ordnance within your worksite during the construction phase can be a game-stopper. Doubt about your risk assessment methods will result in pressure within your organisation, together with the loss of confidence of both stakeholders and shareholders. Vessels placed on standby until the all-clear is given to resume work will be a major financial burden, so it makes sense to understand the basics of planning and executing a UXO campaign to reduce risks to as low as reasonably practicable.
