Why is hybridization a key enabler in solving the puzzle of grid congestion? Well, hybrid power plants have the ability to harness multiple energy sources in a single integrated system, enhancing flexibility in power production and utilizing the power potential to its fullest. Energy storage, which can often be built more rapidly than new transmission, can help ease transmission grid constraints by shifting generation and load over time. But building hybrid power plants – or adding battery storage to existing wind or solar PV plants – is only the first step in actually utilizing the full potential of hybridization. The next step is optimal plant design and configuration. And according to a new study from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the measured impact of hybridization varies depending on the setup. This means that power providers and investors can increase the potential of their power plants by choosing the right setup and right configuration. And that is why we specialize in step 2. Do you know about the energy trilemma? This trilemma describes the difficulty of marrying decarbonization with other important priorities such as affordable energy prices and a continued high level of security of supply. Often, we see that the available technologies in the energy sector – whether it is coal and gas, or wind and solar – often only satisfy two of these goals. Coal is, for example, affordable and can be delivered as needed, but it doesn’t serve well for decarbonization and the green energy transition. Renewables, on the other hand, are both cheap and green but are challenged by their fluctuating nature, making the security of supply a tough task. One of the ways to accommodate this challenge is to promote system flexibility and energy storage solutions. And that is also why system flexibility is a word used more and more by power traders. The flexibility and security energy storage can bring are crucial for power traders to ensure grid reliability, balance supply and demand, and maximize profits. By adapting to renewable sources and strategically storing and selling energy, traders can optimize operations while still ensuring grid stability. At the same time, these innovations support renewable integration and contribute to a more sustainable energy landscape – finding a way to crack the code of the energy trilemma. Wind turbines are noisy and disruptive. Is this true? While wind turbines do make some noise, to hear them, we would have to be within 200 meters and have no other sounds close to us. So, this is simply a myth. The fact is that modern renewable assets are designed to be quiet. Thanks to technological advancements, they have minimized their noise, often making them more silent than everyday sounds. For example, at a distance of 300 meters, a wind turbine creates around 43 decibels of sound. In contrast, household appliances such as a dishwasher or a washing machine range from 60-70 decibels. The most silent appliances — namely, the average fridge or computer — produce around 40 decibels of sound, which is around the same level as the wind turbine. So, in the grand scheme of things, does the sound of a refrigerator really balance out the benefits of installing a wind turbine? We don’t think so.
