After a dramatic U.S. Open that concluded with Bryson DeChambeau winning his second U.S. Open title, the PGA TOUR is hosting their eighth and final signature event of the season in the Travelers Championship. TPC River Highlands (par 70, 6,835 yards, POA/bentgrass mix greens) in Cromwell, Connecticut, has been the home of this tournament since it’s inception in 1984. Last year, Keegan Bradley won by three shots, finishing at -23, which is the second best score in the history of the Travelers. As a signature event, all of the PGA TOUR’s best players will be competing this week. For the first time ever, the Travelers will feature no cut and this is a limited field of only 72 golfers.

TPC River Highlands is a classic Pete Dye design that is home to tiny greens and a ton of hazards. On the grounds, there are 69 bunkers and water comes into play on five holes. TPC River Highlands is the shortest course we have the seen on the PGA TOUR this season and any length of golfer can contend at this venue. TPC River Highlands is a perfect example of a second shot course, and you need to be in pristine form with both your irons and putter to succeed at this scorable venue. Bradley led his field in both SG: Approach and SGP during his win at TPC River Highlands last season, making him the third Travelers winner over the last four years to finish the event top-six in both categories. Of course, with TPC River Highlands being a standard par 70 with 12 par fours, we need to also be targeting elite par-four scorers. Specifically, golfers who are efficient on 400-450-yard par fours are terrific options this week, with eight of the 12 par fours at TPC River Highlands falling in this range. Of the last five winners at this par 70, four have finished the event top-10 in efficiency on the 400-450-yard par fours of TPC River Highlands.

Below, I have featured four of my favorite DraftKings bargain plays for the Travelers Championship that all are priced under $7.5K.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($7,400) – While Bezuidenhout has missed the cut in both of his two starts at TPC River Highlands, he must be rostered at this price tag. The South African is playing some of the best golf of his career and heads to Cromwell this week as the 40th ranked golfer in the world, which is the best he has ever ranked prior to a start at TPC River Highlands. Bezuidenhout has only missed one cut in his last 10 starts, with seven of those finishes coming inside the top-30. Most notably, he had a solo fourth place finish at the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, which like the Travelers, is a signature event that features all of the PGA TOUR’s best players.

While Bezuidenhout has struggled at TPC River Highlands in the past, he is a terrific match for the Dye creation in his current form. When we compare this field’s last 50 rounds, Bezuidenhout ranks 22nd in SG: Approach, fifth in SGP and seventh in 400-450-yard par-4 efficiency. Furthermore, the 30-year-old has teed it up at two Dye courses this season and been very successful, with a T13 at TPC Sawgrass for the PLAYERS Championship and a T28 at Harbour Town for the RBC Heritage.

Taylor Pendrith ($7,100) – After missing the cut by a stroke in his first attempt at TPC River Highlands last year, Pendrith should redeem himself with a quality finish this week. The 33-year-old is coming off a T16 at the U.S. Open last week and was one of only 11 players to gain strokes in every major category at the tough Pinehurst No. 2.

This marked Pendrith’s best major finish to date—his sixth made cut in his last seven solo starts and his eighth top-25 finish of the season. Pendrith is only six weeks removed from his win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and is far too cheap for his sensational form.

Thomas Detry ($7,100) – Detry shined at the challenging Pinehurst No. 2 for last week’s U.S. Open, finishing T14th, which is his best career finish at the major. During this start, the Belgian professional ranked top-seven in both SG: Approach and SGP, and he shot even par or better in three of his four rounds—an impressive feat at the demanding Pinehurst No. 2. Detry has now made eight of his last nine cuts and has flashed great upside during this span, with four finishes of T17 or better including a runner-up at the Houston Open and a T4 at the PGA Championship.

Detry missed the cut in his debut at TPC River Highlands last year, but this is irrelevant considering his current form. Detry ranks seventh in SGP this season, and if he can in anyway replicate his ball striking performance from Pinehurst at the much easier TPC River Highlands, he is a threat to finish inside the top-10 this weekend.

Stephan Jaeger ($7,000) – Jaeger has made 2-of-3 cuts at TPC River Highlands—including a T30 in 2019—and is fresh off a T21 finish at the U.S. Open, which marks the best major finish of his career. Jaeger has now produced eight top-25 finishes in 16 starts this season, five of which have come in his last eight starts.

Included in this sample is a T18 at the RBC Heritage and T21 at the Wells Fargo Championship—both of which are signature events—and Jaeger’s breakthrough win at the Houston Open in March. The 35-year-old has vaulted himself up 61 spots in the world golf rankings since the start of the season and is an awesome bargain at this low salary.
