GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

Guidelines for preparation and submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be written in English and prepared in conformity to the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals, published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) (www.icmje.org).

Manuscripts and all attached files (tables and illustrations) should be submitted in electronic form to the Editorial Office, e-mail address: [email protected]

The preferred software is Microsoft Word.

Manuscripts should be typewritten on A4 format (210x297 mm), with double spacing, margins of 25 mm, consecutively numbered. Times New Roman font, 12-point size is required.

In order to speed up the process of review, manuscripts should be prepared very carefully.

Manuscripts should include a Conflict-of-Interests Disclosure Statement (before References), a Financial Support Statement, a statement of human and animal rights in research involving live subjects.

The authors are fully and solely responsible for the contents of their manuscripts.

Authors are expected to present their results clearly, honestly and without fabrication, falsification or inappropriate data manipulation.

Preparation of manuscripts

Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections and order: Title page, Abstract and keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure Legends and Figures.

  1. Title page contains:

- Article title. The article title should include a synthetic description of the complete article (80-100 characters, including spaces)

- Author information (full name of the authors and their affiliation - name of the department(s) and institution(s) or organization(s) where the work should be attributed)

- The author responsible for correspondence will be marked by an asterisk, and his telephone number and e-mail address will be indicated

- Authors should also provide here a short title of the article

- Disclaimers – e.g. an author’s statement that the views expressed in the submitted article are his or her own and not an official position of the institution or funder

- Sources of support – grants, equipment, drugs and/or other support that helped authors conduct the work described in the article

- Word count. A word count for the text of the manuscript, excluding its Abstract, Acknowledgements, tables, figure legends and references should be provided by the authors for the editors and reviewers to assess whether the submitted manuscript fits within the journal’s formats and word limits. A word count will be separately provided for the Abstract.

  1. Abstract should not exceed 250 words and should reflect the content of the study. For original research studies, systematic reviews articles and clinical practice guidelines structured abstracts are required (Introduction, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusion).

A list of 3-5 keywords should be added below the Abstract.

  1. Introduction containing a description of the problem under investigation and a brief survey of the existing literature on the subject.

  1. Materials and Methods provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced.

The authors should clearly indicate in this section how and why a study was conducted in a particular way.

The same product names should be used throughout the text with the manufacturer’s name written in parentheses (at the first use).

  1. Results should be clear and concise and be presented in a logical sequence in the text.

  1. Discussion section should start by briefly summarizing the main findings. It should enrich and not repeat previous sections (3 or 5).
  1. Conclusions. In this section, the author(s) can summarize the paper’s findings and generalize their importance. It is also where the writer can raise questions, discuss ambiguous data, and recommend places for further research. Conclusions often occur in a section titled “Discussion.” This writing is an extension of a conversation(s) with colleagues.

Publisher's own license, Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

International Journal of Advanced Studies in Sexology (IJASS) and its Publisher, the Sexology Institute of Romania.

In addition, as a journal that follows the IJASS’s Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals, it is expected of authors, reviewers and editors that they follow the best-practice guidelines on ethical behaviour contained therein. A selection of key points is included below, but you should always refer to the three documents listed above for full details.

Duties of Editors

Fair play and editorial independence

Editors evaluate submitted manuscripts exclusively on the basis of their academic merit (importance, originality, study’s validity, clarity) and its relevance to the journal’s scope, without regard to the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, citizenship, religious belief, political philosophy or institutional affiliation. Decisions to edit and publish are not determined by the policies of governments or any other agencies outside of the journal itself. The Editor-in-Chief has full authority over the entire editorial content of the journal and the timing of publication of that content.

Confidentiality

Editors and editorial staff will not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

Editors and editorial board members will not use unpublished information disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research purposes without the authors’ explicit written consent. Privileged information or ideas obtained by editors as a result of handling the manuscript will be kept confidential and not used for their personal advantage. Editors will recuse themselves from considering manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships/connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions connected to the papers; instead, they will ask another member of the editorial board to handle the manuscript.

Publication decisions

The editors ensure that all submitted manuscripts being considered for publication undergo peer-review by at least two reviewers who are expert in the field. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for deciding which of the manuscripts submitted to the journal will be published, based on the validation of the work in question, its importance to researchers and readers, the reviewers’ comments, and such legal requirements as are currently in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The Editor-in-Chief may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision.

Involvement and cooperation in investigations

Editors (in conjunction with the publisher and/or society) will take responsive measures when ethical concerns are raised with regard to a submitted manuscript or published paper. Every reported act of unethical publishing behaviour will be looked into, even if it is discovered years after publication.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to editorial decisions

Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communications with authors, may assist authors in improving their manuscripts. Peer review is an essential component of formal scholarly communication and lies at the heart of scientific endeavour. IJASS shares the view of many that all scholars who wish to contribute to the scientific process have an obligation to do a fair share of reviewing.

Promptness

Any invited referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should immediately notify the editors and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Confidentiality

Any manuscripts received for review are confidential documents and must be treated as such; they must not be shown to or discussed with others except if authorized by the Editor-in-Chief (who would only do so under exceptional and specific circumstances). This applies also to invited reviewers who decline the review invitation.

Standards of objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively and observations formulated clearly with supporting arguments so that authors can use them for improving the manuscript. Personal criticism of the authors is inappropriate.

Acknowledgement of sources

Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that is an observation, derivation or argument that has been reported in previous publications should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also notify the editors of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other manuscript (published or unpublished) of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

Any invited referee who has conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies or institutions connected to the manuscript and the work described therein should immediately notify the editors to declare their conflicts of interest and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the authors. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for the reviewer’s personal advantage. This applies also to invited reviewers who decline the review invitation.

Duties of Authors

Reporting standards

Authors of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed and the results, followed by an objective discussion of the significance of the work. The manuscript should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Review articles should be accurate, objective and comprehensive, while editorial 'opinion' or perspective pieces should be clearly identified as such. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.

Data access and retention

Authors may be asked to provide the raw data of their study together with the manuscript for editorial review and should be prepared to make the data publicly available if practicable. In any event, authors should ensure accessibility of such data to other competent professionals for at least 10 years after publication (preferably via an institutional or subject-based data repository or other data centre), provided that the confidentiality of the participants can be protected and legal rights concerning proprietary data do not preclude their release.

Originality and plagiarism

Authors should ensure that they have written and submit only entirely original works, and if they have used the work and/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited. Publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the work reported in the manuscript should also be cited. Plagiarism takes many forms, from "passing off" another's paper as the author's own, to copying or paraphrasing substantial parts of another's paper (without attribution), to claiming results from research conducted by others. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Multiple, duplicate, redundant or concurrent submission/publication

Papers describing essentially the same research should not be published in more than one journal or primary publication. Hence, authors should not submit for consideration a manuscript that has already been published in another journal. Submission of a manuscript concurrently to more than one journal is unethical publishing behaviour and unacceptable.

The publication of some kinds of articles (such as clinical guidelines, translations) in more than one journal is sometimes justifiable, provided that certain conditions are met. The authors and editors of the journals concerned must agree to the secondary publication, which must reflect the same data and interpretation of the primary document. The primary reference must be cited in the secondary publication.

Authorship of the manuscript

Only persons who meet these authorship criteria should be listed as authors in the manuscript as they must be able to take public responsibility for the content: (i) made significant contributions to the conception, design, execution, data acquisition, or analysis/interpretation of the study; and (ii) drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content; and (iii) have seen and approved the final version of the paper and agreed to its submission for publication. All persons who made substantial contributions to the work reported in the manuscript (such as technical help, writing and editing assistance, general support) but who do not meet the criteria for authorship must not be listed as an author, but should be acknowledged in the "Acknowledgements" section after their written permission to be named as been obtained. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate coauthors (according to the above definition) and no inappropriate coauthors are included in the author list and verify that all coauthors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.

Disclosure and conflicts of interest

Authors should—at the earliest stage possible (generally by submitting a disclosure form at the time of submission and including a statement in the manuscript)—disclose any conflicts of interest that might be construed to influence the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. Examples of potential conflicts of interest that should be disclosed include financial ones such as honoraria, educational grants or other funding, participation in speakers’ bureaus, membership, employment, consultancies, stock ownership, or other equity interest, and paid expert testimony or patent-licensing arrangements, as well as non-financial ones such as personal or professional relationships, affiliations, knowledge or beliefs in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the work should be disclosed (including the grant number or other reference number if any).

Acknowledgement of sources

Authors should ensure that they have properly acknowledged the work of others, and should also cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately (from conversation, correspondence or discussion with third parties) must not be used or reported without explicit, written permission from the source. Authors should not use information obtained in the course of providing confidential services, such as refereeing manuscripts or grant applications, unless they have obtained the explicit written permission of the author(s) of the work involved in these services.

Hazards and human or animal subjects

If the work involves chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the authors must clearly identify these in the manuscript. If the work involves the use of animals or human participants, the authors should ensure that all procedures were performed in compliance with relevant laws and institutional guidelines and that the appropriate institutional committee(s) has approved them; the manuscript should contain a statement to this effect. Authors should also include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with human participants. The privacy rights of human participants must always be observed.

Peer review

Authors are obliged to participate in the peer review process and cooperate fully by responding promptly to editors’ requests for raw data, clarifications, and proof of ethics approval, patient consents and copyright permissions. In the case of a first decision of "revisions necessary", authors should respond to the reviewers’ comments systematically, point by point, and in a timely manner, revising and re-submitting their manuscript to the journal by the deadline given.

Abstract

Taking to consideration the antropology venues, the medical disclosures regarding paraphilia, centered on pedophilia, the present paper tries to make an introduction review on the topic under discussion. However, regardless the type of studies made over the time, whether they consisted in questionnaires and forums where people were invited to comment upon this sexual disorder or deviation, to more complex medical research involving MRI scans and DNA analysis, none of them proved their effectiveness, or found a real cause.

Abstract
Sexual deviance is in some way a socially constructed phenomenon that shifts over time with public opinion. The various forms of sexual deviancy are grouped and defined utilizing the DSM-IV descriptions (American Psychitric Association, 1994), because this clasification it is the most frequently used in forensic settings. Adult sexual assault is an essential focus of forensic psychology, variously diagnosed as sexual sadism, paraphilia NOS (not otherwise specified), or undiagnosed. Other forms of sexual deviance presented here include voyeurism, exhibitionism, frotteurism, sexual sadism, rape and pedophilia. Each category is briefly explored through its etiology, course, epidemiology, assessment and treatment (Sbraga, 2004). Sexual sadism is said to be a disorder in which sexual satisfaction is reached and causing another suffering, psysical or mental pain through humiliation. In this article, its about addressing some theoretical aspects regarding the sexual deviance, but also the exemplification of a parafilic category, namely sexual sadism.

Abstract
Zoophilia is a paraphilia through which the perpetrator has sexual pleasure of having sex with animals. Most countries have laws against this practice. Zoophilia can be classified in several ways according to the criteria chosen by the author. In principle, sexual contact between humans and animals has a lot of names such as zoophilia, bestiality and zooerasty. These terms continue to be used in different ways by different authors, usually creating a certain amount of confusion. Someone suggested that a mathematical classification of zoophilia, which could group all the nuances of zoophilia into different numerical classes, could be a way to put an end to this confusion. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is clinically defined by specific symptoms such as bradykinesia, muscle rigidity, postural instability, and resting tremor. The diagnosis is based on the presence of these symptoms and an appropriate response to treatment with Levodopa. However, non-motor symptoms, including sexual dysfunction, are common and least recognized in PD patients. Zoophilia is an aberrant sexual behaviour that can be found in Parkinson’s disease. In this study, a clinical picture of this sexual perversion is described and the possible causal relationship between this impulsive disorder and Parkinson’s disease therapy is discussed.

Abstract
Dyspareunia in men refers to a difficult or painful sexual intercourse. Symptoms can be classified as psychogenic, organic, or mixed. It generates mental discomfort and sexual involvement absence up to couple issue. DSM V indexes the disease as „Other specific and non-specific disorders”. Somatic examination of individuals with this disorder doesn’t usually prove genital abnormalities. Repeated experience of genital pain during sexual intercourse may result in the avoidance of sexual experience, breaking existing sexual relationships or limiting the development of new sexual intercourses. Worldwide prevalence of dyspareunia in men is 5%. The disorder may emerge from the beginning of the sexual life or begin after a period of relatively normal sexual function.

Abstract
Fetishism, as a technical descriptor of atypical sexual behaviour, was noted in the writings of the well-known nineteenth century French psychologist Alfred Binet (1857–1911) (Binet, 1887) as well as prominent European sexologists Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840–1902) (Krafft-Ebing, 1886), Havelock Ellis (1859–1939) (Ellis, 1906), and Magnus Hirschfeld (1868– 1935) (Hirschfeld, 1956). In their seminal writings, all of the afore mentioned sexologists used the terms “fetish” and “fetishism” to specifically describe an intense eroticization of either non-living objects and/or specific body parts that were symbolically associated with a person. Fetishes could be non clinical manifestations of a normal spectrum of eroticization or clinical disorders causing significant interpersonal difficulties. Ellis (1906) observed that body secretions or body products could also become fetishist expressions of “erotic symbolism”. Freud (1928) considered both body parts (e.g., the foot) or objects associated with the body (e.g., shoes) as fetish objects. For the purposes of this review, a “broader” historically based core definition for Fetishism will include intense and recurrent sexual arousal to: non-living objects, an exclusive focus on body parts or body products.

Dyspareunia is a genital pain that occurs just before, during or after intercourse. The factors involved can be physical or psychological. Women with dyspareunia may complain of a well-defined and localized pain or they may express a general disinterest in and dissatisfaction with intercourse that results from the associated discomfort. Although dyspareunia is present in both sexes, it is far more common in women, with the pain initiating in several areas, from vulvar surfaces to deep pelvic structures. Worldwide prevalence of dyspareunia in women is 15% and can be maintained depending on partner, stimulation, etc. or regardless partner, stimulation, etc. The disorder may emerge from the beginning of the sexual life or begin after a period of relatively normal sexual function.

Abstract
Frotteurism / frotteuristic disorder seems to be a quite rare paraphylic disorder. This comes from a relatively low prevalence (variation in the literature on this matter) and especially by the lack of data on it in the literature. Interestingly, DSM-III did not include Frotteurism in the 8 paraphiles listed with criteria for a diagnostis. Frotteurism first appeared in DSM-III-R. The frotteuristic disorder is included in DSM 5. The use and meaning of the word frotteurism in sexual terms comes from a French psychiatrist Valentin Magnan in 1890. He described men doing something that he called rubbing - rubbing their penis by women's back without them noticing. The word comes from "frotter" a french word, that means rubbing or putting pressure on someone, and has no sexual connotation. Lussier P., et al. (2008).

Abstract
Franklin, K. (2010) defined Hebephilia as an obscure term, that is very rarely found in the field of medicine, psychiatry or psychology. Moreover, it is not listed as a DSM diagnosis (APA, 2000) neither in the ICD (World Health Organization, 2007) or any other validated sources for diagnosis. Therefore, research in academic database show that this specific word is very poorly used and it cannot be found not even in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

Abstract

The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler sees the couple and the intimacy as life tasks, and the couple as a social relation. The individuals of a couple are two personalities that share their early childhood cooperation model based on private logic. As intimacy and sex are a representation of ones convictions put together with another human being, the female orgasm disorder is closely related to one's' life believes and distorted convictions. This article tries to explain the link between the early life experiences and subconscious beliefs and the female orgasm disorder.

Abstract

According to DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition), transvestic disorder is a form of paraphilia reported almost exclusively in men. Sexual arousal manifested in its most obvious form – as an erection of the penis – can be associated with transvestism in various manners. The diagnosis of transvestic disorder applies to individuals who practice transvestism and whose fantasies about disguising in clothes that are specific to the other sex and whose associated behaviours are always or frequently accompanied by sexual arousal, and to whom this type of behaviour causes emotional discomfort, or a significant dysfunction manifested clinically in various areas of their life. This paper tries to explore the onset, the evolution, the various psychological factors that emerge as a result the paraphilic disorder, and, respectively, the criteria used to the purpose of clinical assessment, and the specific therapeutic approaches to the disorder.

Dyspareunia and Vaginismus are two clinical forms of painful sexual intercourses, affecting mostly the premenopausal women with vaginal atrophy, and young 18-24 years old women. The symptoms may be caused by medical and gynaecological problems. The unpleasant intercourse has got a huge impact on the partner and the quality of marriage. Some women accuse themselves; some are aggressed, and their partner develop sexual aversion, anxiety, shame, depression, hostility, anger. The understanding partner is opened to communication and supports the healing process. Psychotherapy is needed for both partners, with clearly defined objectives which informs the couple that complete remission is very difficult to obtain. Women who suffer of dyspareunia have an increased sensitivity to pain. In the case of dyspareunia caused by medical conditions, healing consists of relaxation methods, exercises, progressive muscle relaxation and variation of sexual life „temperature” of the relationship, involving the partner in the therapy too. The client needs to feel that she is beautiful, attractive. She needs to maintain a permanent dialog with the partner. This is an important marital problem and therapists need to respect the values of the family involved. For the future it is important to help women and couples (classical, homosexual, disabled) to cure painful sexual intercourse and improve their intimacy.

Keywordsdyspareunia, vaginismus, dyadic approach, painful intercourse.

Abstract

The conceptualization of excessive sexual behavior has been intensely debated over the years, and the concept of hypersexuality is still controversial. After long debates, the indexation in ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, World Health Organization, 2018) of excessive and problematic sexual behavior as a compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) is welcome. There are still debates about the category of the disorder. In ICD-11, CSBD is classified as an impulse control disorder, but this classification is controversial, as there is evidence that CSBD has many addictive features (Kraus et al., 2016). Although the diagnosis of hypersexual disorder, proposed by Kafka, was not included in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, American Psychiatric Association, 2013), this diagnosis was supported by both clinical contexts as well as by some research that indicates that excessive sexual behavior can have serious consequences in an individual’s life (Kafka, 2010; Kaplan & Krueger, 2010, Reid et al., 2012).

Understanding, defining, and correctly diagnosing this disorder are important prerequisites for proper treatment, and allow also warning of certain risk factors for the development of this disorder.

Abstract

Orgasm disorder in women has become an increasingly common reason to consult a doctor, psychotherapist, but especially a sexologist. In this paper we will try to define the concept of anorgasmia, but first we should clarify the terminology. In women, anorgasmia can be caused by various physical and psychological factors that influence the pelvic floor area, having certain associations with other symptoms of sexual dysfunction, such as vulvodynia, dyspareunia, and loss of sexual desire or libido. We will address female orgasm disorder by integrating some elements of psychosexual history and its characteristics. We shall explain the onset, manifestation of this disorder, the causes, the clinical approach, the treatment, and we shall explore the physiological and psychological factors involved in this female orgasm disorder.

Abstract

Vaginismus is a hidden problem because it is not discussed enough among professionals or inside the family. Consequently, the treatment of this problem is done secretly and by people who are not professionals, not to mention that they do not know what vaginismus really is. Vaginismus causes a woman’s pelvic floor muscles to contract at the attempt of vaginal penetration, making the vagina narrower and tighter. These muscle spasms are involuntary, and women with vaginismus often have trouble with any type of vaginal penetration, such as vaginal intercourse, tampon insertion, and gynecological exams. Penetration, when possible, is usually quite painful and causes great anxiety. For some women, intercourse is impossible. We present series of three cases treated in our Institute after a long-time treatment by others. All of them came et our Institute after a long period of time seeking alternative help and hiding the problem. Much work needs to be done on the sex education of the population in order to make them aware that they can discuss sexual problems freely. Physicians and other health personnel should also include a sexual history as an equal part of the medical examination.

Abstract

Objectives: The present research addresses the stage of perception of Romanian respondents regarding Sars-CoV-2 contamination and their sexual behaviour. Specifically, the goal is to observe whether respondents use protection measures during their sexual activity.

Methods: The study included 621 participants randomly chose. Online scales were used, mainly the Covid-19 Sexuality Assessment Questionnaire, to assess perceptions of Sars-CoV-2 virus contamination and on sexual behaviours.

Results: Scores were obtained for the three stages investigated: real information, one’s sources of information and the stage of pandemic and sexual behaviour. The frequency of answers obtained was F = 49 and the expected frequency was F = 60.9 for real information about Covid-19, having an insignificant p > 0.5. The frequency of the answers obtained was F = 52 and the expected frequency was F = 50.7 for one’s information sources, having a significant p < 0.1. The frequency of the answers obtained was F = 18 and the expected frequency of F = 16.9 for the pandemic stage and sexual behaviour, having an insignificant p > 0.5.

Conclusions: The results obtained show that the respondents had less official and specialized information with and about the sexual life during pandemic, and no exact data about the danger they are exposed to in terms of transmission with the Sars-CoV-2 virus.

Abstract

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly around the world leading to massive changes in various areas. World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this disease a global pandemic in March 2020 causing a range of restrictions and global lockdown. Sexual behaviors have suffered change because of the virus transmission and governmental regulations for

people to stay inside their homes. This paper addresses the quality of sexual life during lockdown in Romanian population. We discuss results from an online survey of 395 adults who were asked about their intimate lives, in terms of pornography consumption, solo masturbation and sexual intercourse. We also collected data regarding variables of a good relationship in order to see wether they have an

influence over sexual life. We found that a good relationship is strongly connected to quality of sexual life. Our results also show that many people have solo masturbated (72,2%) and have consumed pornography materials (56,5%).

Abstract

Erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE) are among the most common male sexual dysfunctions. Meta-analytical studies and systematic reviews describe the frequently comorbid appearance of these two pathologies, being correlated with less favorable experiences with young females. People affected by these pathologies are more likely to have anxiety or depression and have a lower prevalence of organic comorbidities such as diabetes, high blood pressure or dyslipidemia (1,2).

Abstract

The first physiological response to effective sexual stimulation, produced by a source of physical or mental stimulation, is the erection of the penis. Erection usually occurs within 3-8 seconds of the onset of arousal. When sexual tension and erection reach a certain level in the presence of the partner, the need for interference appears. The intensity of the erection may increase or decrease until it disappears, whether the arousal is prolonged or not. The complicated anatomical apparatus is regulated by a nervous mechanism, just as complex, being dependent to a remarkable extent on psychic influences. By the strong interweaving of these two components - psychological and functional - the sexual function is subject to changes. Erectile dysfunction, when it occurs, is obvious because, although there may be libido, the lack of an erection makes it impossible to perform sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction should not be confused with isolated or occasional failures to obtain or maintain a penile erection. They do not constitute a condition or disease that justifies medical attention and should be perceived as absolutely normal. The vast majority of men face such an episode at some point in their lives. One can speak of erectile dysfunction in the case of a recurrent or persistent inability to obtain an erection or to maintain it long enough to complete sexual intercourse, which lasts at least three months. It is especially important because in a normal activity, without erection, intercourse, ejaculation and orgasm cannot take place. (Pathologically, premature ejaculation can occur, without an erection, in the form of pollution!)

Abstract

However, in this review paper, I use the narrower definition of sadism - that it is the experience of the hedonic value of cruel and antisocial acts - for three reasons. First, the experience of pleasure appears in all definitions of sadism, while the motivation for power is included only in some of them. Second, in works describing the Dark Tetrad (i.e., psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism, and sadism), the pleasure of cruelty is what defines sadism, not the desire for power. Third, it is difficult to say definitively that someone who acts cruelly to gain power over someone also does not experience pleasure. In other words, even if an individual can report a motivation to gain power over an individual, this may be because he / she considers power to be pleasurable - which means that the ultimate motivation could still be pleasure.

Abstract

Vaginismus is a relatively rare female sexual dysfunction, but with significant disabling potential. Vaginismus can be defined as involuntary spasms of the muscles surrounding the vaginal opening. Its severe form makes it impossible to penetrate and causes severe pain, burning sensations. As early as 1547, when vaginismus was first described, and to this day, it continues to be an intensely researched topic, with thousands of papers published. However, the etiology of vaginismus remains controversial. Vaginismus has been shown to be a sexual disorder that has phobic elements resulting from patients' actual or imagined negative sexual experiences. Most women who suffer from vaginismus express their fear and anxiety about the act of penetration, generally feel ashamed or disgusted with their genitals.

Abstract

The rationalization used by rapists to justify their criminal behavior are a risk factor for relapse. The modification of cognitive distortions is a therapeutic purpose for rehabilitation (Someda, 2009). Using Rape Scale (Bumby, 1996) we evaluated the participants’ (N=480, 57 convicted rapists, 223 students non-rapists)  level of cognitive distortions related to rape. Using ANOVA we identified differences between convicted rapists, psychology or law students and polytechnic students (F (3,461) = 60,69, .000, η2p =0.283). In line with previous research (Bell, Kuriloff & Lottes, 1994), men are more lenient with rapists, accept more justifications about rape and blame the victim more. We identified differences between male and female participants and between male students and convicted rapists (F (2,477) = 98,88, .000,  η2p =.293).This research brings new evidence for the importance of cognitive restructuring for implicit cognitive distortions. We discuss possible limitations and directions for future research.

Abstract

In the specialized literature, sexual desire disorder is approached as a decrease in sexual interest, a lack of fantasies about sexual activity, decreased libido or frigidity. Gutceit believes that “out of 10 women 4 do not feel anything during intercourse and endure it without having the slightest pleasant sensation during friction and without having any idea about the pleasure of ejaculation”, and Debrunner even adds that 50% of women are insensitive and one cannot speak of a proper libido.

Information on the epidemiology, etiology and treatment of premature ejaculation is reviewed. Evidence of the prevalence of premature ejaculation indicates that subjective concern about rapid ejaculation is a common concern worldwide. The hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis of premature ejaculation include: 1.) that it is a learned model of ejaculation maintained by interpersonal anxiety and 2.) that it is a dysfunctional result of the central or peripheral mechanisms that regulate ejaculatory thresholds and 3.) that it is a normal variant in latency ejaculation. Abstract

We worked with the fact that, nowadays, the majority of teachers in schools are female, so the aim of our research became to assess the general state of mental hygiene in female teachers, and its causal relations. In this study we presented the may-sided, diversified roots of the research, based on positive, Jungian and personal psychology, educational researches on teachers personality, gender issues in education. We also exhibited the connected studies on stress and burn out mostly in connection to teachers and the field of education. The research has a specific focus on female teachers' mental hygiene states in connection with their developing professional and female identity. We pointed out some connections of our main points of examination and the Finnish teacher training practice, too. As a main hypothesis we presume that just a certain group of female teachers are in a state of fragile mental hygiene. In the detailed hypotheses we are looking for evidence that the mental hygiene state shows differences between certain groups among female teachers. The best way for examination appeared to be by using two validated (MBI-ES, LOT-R) and two personal creating questionnaires (BÉIK, SzSzK, only in Hungarian), as a comparative survey. On the whole, our starting assumption has been proved, that female teachers' mental hygiene state in our meaning the level of burnout and psychological well-being are in connection with the level of the elaboration of their professional and female identity.

Abstract

Mean-making is a very complex process, involving social, moral and psychological aspects. When it comes to trauma or crimes, the ability to “make sense” of the events and to find meaning in the midst of chaos is associated with greater psychological resilience (Chan et al., 2006). However, when it comes to sexual offenders, the existence of a usual stuck-point in mean-making. Specifically, given the many levels of the crime the offender is usually not able to access all these levels, as some are deeper than their awareness. At that moment, the talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for developing adaptive skills are crucial, as they have to create a safe context, in which the person can think freely and explore their inner world.

Abstract

Objectives: The present body of work presents a case study addressing the development of sexual behaviors in a patient with primary anorgasmia in order to reduce emotional distress manifested by guilt, embarrassment, and performance anxiety, as well as learning new sexual patterns to increase pleasure and sexual satisfaction. Specifically, we sought to create a positive attitude toward sexuality as part of mental health and increase self-confidence in expressing one's sexuality. Reaching orgasm by the patient was not a stated goal, not to accentuate the distress, but the development of sexual behaviors aimed to increase the duration and intensity of arousal and more frequent manifestation of sexual desire, designed to create the conditions for its occurrence.

Method: This is a case study on a 44-year-old patient, during 20 sex therapy sessions of 1 hour each, for 22 weeks, May-September 2021. Assessment methods for Axis I and Axis II, anamnesis and clinical observation, structured, semi-structured, and unstructured clinical interviews (Delcea C., 2021), and investigation of medical, family, sexual, socio-cultural, and psycho-social history (individual completion) - MCMI III psychometric tests (Millon), Scale of Anxiety Hamilton, HRSA (SEC), PDA Affective Distress Profile, Opris D., Macavei B. ( SEC); For sexual testing: Genogram of excitatory stimuli, (Delcea C., 2021), FSFI Female Sexual Function Index, Rosen M. 2000, FSDS Female Sexual Distress Scale, Derogatis, 2019, FOS Female Orgasm Scale, McIntyre, Smith, 2019, ORS The Orgasm Rating Scale, Mah K., Binik, 2019, MISSA Multiple Indicators of Subjective Sexual Arousal, Mosher DL, 2019- SISES Sexual Inhibition / Excitation Scale, (Milhausen RR 2019). Methods used in sex therapy intervention (face to face): to identify stimuli of pleasure, arousal, and sexual relaxation, having as source the partner's body we used the Genogram of excitatory stimuli, the technique of anticipating excitatory stimuli, and the technique of defocusing irrelevant stimuli. (Delcea C., 2021). Sensate focus and directed masturbation to identify individual arousal stimuli, and self-monitoring through journals. 3. Cognitive restructuring of dysfunctional cognitions. 4. Progressive desensitization, in the construction and practice of new exciting sexual behaviors. 6. Psychoeducation. 7. Relaxation techniques (eg breathing, mindfulness).

Results: Following the standard psychological assessment, the patient has no Axis I and II emotional disorders, and no history of sexual abuse. The MCMI profile shows a person without clinical personality disorders, but a very high level of Distress (PDA), present cognitive schemas, Negativism, and Need for approval that outlines a possible anxious predisposition, as well as present dysfunctional attitudes of medium level, considered as predispositions for depression. Sexual testing with the score sc = 19 FSDS scale, (Derogatis, LR 2002) The sexual distress scale in women shows that the patient has a high level of stress that positively correlates with the existence of sexual dysfunction, manifested by feelings of shame, guilt, inadequacy, and average sexual satisfaction. From the 2 orgasm measurement scales, FOS (McIntyre - Smith, 2019) and ORS (Mah K., Binik, Y., 2019) there is a lack of experience of orgasm by the subject, throughout life and an increased dissatisfaction. The FSFI Scale Index of sexual functioning in women (Rosen R., 2000) shows the same difficulty in experiencing orgasm in the context in which sexual desire exists and the level of arousal is high, from the subjective assessment of the patient. Sexual desire - 4.2; Excitation - 5.1; Lubrication - 4.2; Orgasm - 1.2; Sexual satisfaction - 4.4; Disappearance - 0.9 (maximum = 6.0). The genogram of excitatory stimuli shows an insufficient register of excitatory stimuli on the partner's body, 4 out of 8 (face, chest, and arms) and an absent register of excitatory physical stimuli having as source its own body, absent fantasies, unique, poor and repetitive scenarios.

Conclusions: This is a patient without mental disorders with clinical significance, with predispositions for the installation of anxiety and depression, high level of distress. There is a poor sexual history and reduced and inadequate arousal. Absent fantasies, absent masturbation, dysfunctional cognitions about sex, "sex is unknown, forbidden, dangerous", register of excitatory stimuli on one's own absent body, and reduced for the partner's body, sexual pattern during predominantly passive sexual intercourse, on receiving pleasure, focused on the partner's body. There is a lack of development of arousal stimuli and consequently, sexual behaviors maintain orgasm dysfunction.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this case study is to change the cognitive-behavioral and sex-therapy mechanisms to reduce sexual distress, relieve anxiety, and shift the focus to solving the problem of premature ejaculation of a 35-year-old patient, reaching the stage of changing the sexual focus with the sensory one, by diversifying the excitatory stimuli so that his pleasure and satisfaction help him maintain normal functioning of his sexual and mental life.

Methods: In the therapeutic intervention we applied CBT intervention techniques in cognitive behavioral therapy thus analyzing cognitions, behaviors, and emotions. 1. Standard testing, 2. Sexual testing, 3. Treatment plan. The standard clinical psychological testing used anamnesis and clinical observation, structured, semi-structured, and unstructured clinical interviews (Delcea C. 2021) as well as clinical evaluation scales The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD 7), The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ- 9) Depression Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI II), Trauma Symptom Checklist (TSC-40), Symptom Checklist 90-R, Attachment Style Identification Questionnaire (Diana Poole Heller). For sexual testing, we used the PESI-Premature Ejaculation Severity Index questionnaire, sexual interviews (Delcea C., 2021). The methodology used in sex therapy intervention: 1. To understand the stimuli of excitement, pleasure, and relaxation, we used the Genogram of excitatory stimuli (Delcea C., 2019) to focus other stimuli on the favorite erogenous zone of the present model of arousal. 2. We used the CBE model (Cognition, Behavior, Emotion) in the cognitive restructuring of dysfunctional cognitions as well as the relational model for identifying and establishing the couple relationship and relational cooperation as well as intimacy and communication. 3. We decreased sexual distress involving decreased performance anxiety as well as relaxation techniques, anticipatory steps technique, distributive thinking technique, management technique, sexual anxiety (fear of performance), disturbance management, relationship management (Standardized intervention model SON, Delcea C ., 2019) as well as progressive desensitization, awareness of critical points and self-help by taking responsibility for the problem, gaining control over ejaculation and understanding the situation of premature ejaculation, improving communication, overcoming the barrier of privacy, accepting one's feelings about dysfunction, growth in one's own sexual performance as well as resolving interpersonal conflicts that maintain dysfunction. 4. Methods of Psychoeducation: The human sexual response, the anatomy, and physiology of the male and female body as well as the analysis of the genitals, the change of the cognitive system regarding everything in a positive and playful note of the situation.

Results: In the PHQ-9 test score = 10, the subject has no clinical depression. In the GAD-7 test, the score = 8 shows that the subject has slight anxiety, which correlates with the interview data regarding his performance anxiety. In the TSC 40 test score = 10, the subject does not present clinical symptoms of trauma. In the BDI test - 2 score = 12, it shows the presence of a slight mood disorder without symptoms of clinical depression. The SC 90-R test does not show any mental disorders present on Axis I - II. From the test we notice that Marian has a slight anxiety related to his sexual problem of premature ejaculation, thus finding out that the anxiety causes him a slight fear of sexual performance. He had unrealistic expectations of him as a man considering that a normal sexual act lasts 30 minutes, having no control over his ejaculation, his sexual scenarios and fantasies being unimaginative, he is seeing sexuality as a performance, not as an exchange of emotions and feelings in the making of moments of affection.

Conclusions: Following the applied methodology, the subject presented a positive evolution, acquiring information about his dysfunction and the human sexual response.

Abstract

Purpose: This study addresses the issue of how stress is related to sexual problems among women and men in close relationships (we considered stable couples). Psychological symptoms, relationship quality, daily internal stress (meaning, stress that comes from the couple, such as conflicts, concern for the partner), daily external stress (meaning, stress that occurs outside the couple, such as stress at work, stressful relatives and so on) were examined for their association with various sexual problems.

Method: The study included 38 couples participating in this study, chosen at random from a sample of sexually active couples. Online questionnaires were used.

Results: The results so far support the hypotheses that 1) there is an incremental effect or stress on sexual problems, controlling psychological symptoms and the quality of the relationship and that 2) it is primarily internal daily stress. Emotional stress that is related to sexual problems, especially hypoactive sexual desire in women and men, sexual aversion in women, vaginismus in women and premature ejaculation in men.

Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the treatment of these sexual problems should address relationship issues, including a focus on helping individuals to improve their stress management skills in their relationship. Inner stress plays a key role in sexual behavior, this study once again highlights the fact that better communication as a couple, relaxation and finding specific copying methods are a good remedy, but more studies are needed to demonstrate effectiveness them.

Abstract

Objective: The research evaluates the effectiveness of an online CBT program through the S-ONapp method addressed to both partners in order to decrease female sexual problems and increase the sexual satisfaction of both partners in the postpartum period.

Method: In a randomized clinical trial, participants - women in the first 3 months postpartum with sexual problems revealed by FSFI scale scores - were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental group (CBT online intervention for both partners) and control group (intervention CBT online standard for women). For both groups, scores on the FSFI (female sexual disorder), NSSS-S (sexual satisfaction) scales for both partners, and DAS (couple satisfaction) scales for both partners are measured on pretest, posttest, and 6-month follow-up.

Expected results: Regarding the control group, we expect that in the experimental group there will be: 1) a lower level of postpartum sexual problems reported by women in the posttest; 2) a higher level of sexual satisfaction reported by women in the posttest; 3) a higher level of sexual satisfaction reported by partners in the posttest; 4) a higher level of couple satisfaction reported by women in the posttest; 5) a higher level of couple satisfaction reported by partners in the posttest. The results are maintained 6 months after the intervention.

Conclusions: An online CBT intervention program for both partners, based on a multidimensional approach to postpartum female sexual problems, is effective in improving the sexual life of both partners by increasing sexual satisfaction and couple satisfaction, with direct implications for the clinical field.

Abstract

Objectives: This paper addresses the disorder of orgasm in women, from an integrative-strategic point of view. Through this paper we summarize the impact of various aspects of individual life on sexuality, taking into account a multitude of variables related to self and self-construction, such as biological, behavioral, cognitive, existential, emotional, spiritual or psychodynamic.

We are specifically interested in whether certain aspects of the individual's life affect sexual dysfunction.

Method: The case study presents the case of a patient who requested psychotherapy stating that she does not have an orgasm. The psychotherapeutic model used was the integrative-strategic one, structured on the six psychological axes, in the approach of each axis specific therapeutic interventions learned in the training of the psychotherapist at the Association for Research, Counseling and Integrative Psychotherapy were applied. The working period was from August 2020 to December 2021.

Results: The orgasm disorder may persist, being affected by the couple's life, family history, parental patterns, body image, self-esteem and various coping mechanisms.

Conclusions: It is necessary to have several approaches and the continuation of psychotherapy, both individually and as a couple, in order to observe favorable results in disturbing the patient's orgasm.

Abstract

Objective: Endometriosis is a chronic disease with multiple negative implications for the quality of life and mental health of affected women. It can significantly affect various aspects of their lives and can cause long-term suffering in the psycho-emotional, social and sexual spheres.

The aim of this paper is to present the consequences of endometriosis on female sexual function and the quality of couple relationships, as well as the importance of a multidimensional approach to it.

Methods: A literature search investigating the sexual function of patients with endometriosis was performed to identify the effect of endometriosis on women's sexuality.

Results: Endometriosis has negative effects in various areas of female sexual function. Dyspareunia occurs as a common symptom in women with endometriosis and causes severe impairment of sexual function, couple relationships and psychological well-being. However, the presence of dyspareunia is not the only discouraging factor in the sexual health of these women, as a general impairment of sexual function in all its aspects is perpetuated over time: desire, satisfaction, orgasm, pain.

Conclusions: Women with endometriosis report significantly more sexual dysfunction compared to healthy women. This issue deserves special attention in the case of endometriosis, in the decision-making process for treatment.

As a complex condition, endometriosis requires an integrative and multidisciplinary approach that includes, in addition to surgical and pharmacological approaches, emotional and social support, stress reduction, psychosexual therapy, and an emphasis on quality of life, pain management, sex, and relationships.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to identify the effectiveness of an intervention program based on minfulness techniques in treating premature ejaculation.

Method: In a randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT), the participants, 500 men aged 18 to 60 in Romania with premature ejaculation, randomly divided into two groups: experimental group, who will benefit from 60 days of training of mindfulness techniques and the control group that will perform the same measurements of premature ejaculation (PEDT and IELT) but without intervention. The intervention will consist of learning and practicing mindfulness techniques (breathing exercises, meditation, body scanning).

Expected results: According to studies and literature, we expect to improve the symptoms of premature ejaculation and increase the interval from the appearance of erection to ejaculation in the experimental group as a result of the techniques learned.

Conclusions: interventions based on mindfulness techniques are effective in relieving premature ejaculation. The isolation of effective techniques and the mechanisms involved requires further research.

Abstract

Sexual dysfunction can have a significant effect on quality of life, but is not reported or underdiagnosed. A review of the recent literature highlights the correlation between sexual dysfunction and poor quality of life in people with psychiatric comorbidities and explores several aspects that influence care, from patient follow-up to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. Sexual dysfunction (DS) has been shown to be predominant, but underdiagnosed and often untreated due to communication barriers between patients and physicians. The pharmacogenic and morphogenic causes of sexual problems are often difficult to differentiate. Psychiatric illness may increase the risk of DS, and DS may further aggravate psychiatric problems, suggesting a two-way relationship. Their effective treatment often involves a combination of elements of psychotherapy and behavioral therapies with pharmacotherapeutic interventions, if necessary. The persistence of sexual problems has a significant negative impact on patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment, but also on the patient's quality of life. Routine assessment of sexual function needs to be integrated into ongoing care to identify and address early problems. If sexual dysfunction is ignored, the psychiatric disorder can be maintained, the outcome of treatment can be compromised, and it can lead to non-compliance with treatment schedules.

Abstract

The concept of being transgender or gender variant goes back to Asia and India where there was a third recognized gender, Hijra. More recently, there has been a significant increase in the awareness of people who are not comfortable with the sex assigned to them at birth and who choose to assume gender roles of the opposite sex, and even resort to medical treatments or surgery to change their sex. assigned in the opposite sex. In recent centuries, this topic has been treated differently, for example, in 1972 an educational book for children, William's Doll, was published by an influential American writer, Charlotte Zolotow, about a boy, William, who desperately wants a doll. to love despite his father's persistent desire to play with traditional male toys. In addition, over the next four decades, children's books have been developed on this topic, such as how to approach boys who wanted to wear dresses. To understand this disorder in the broader context of sexual disorders, we first ask ourselves: What is gender dysphoria? As a general definition, gender dysphoria can be presented as a condition that causes a person discomfort or suffering because there is a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity. Or, as otherwise defined, a condition in which the gender of a person assigned at birth and the gender with which he identifies are incongruent. (Davy, 2018). Until the adoption of the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases Review 11) by the WHO, it was called a sexual identity disorder and later the condition was renamed and moved from the Mental and Behavioral Disorders section to get rid of the stigma associated with the term disorder. Along the same lines, in the 5th edition of the Handbook of Diagnosis and Statistics of Mental Disorders, the American Psychiatric Association changed the diagnosis of gender identity disorder into Gender Dysphoria (DG). In the literature, this initiative has been praised, precisely for excluding the term “disorder” (Davy, The DSM-5 and the Politics of Diagnosing Transpeople, 2015).

Abstract

Objectives: Assessment tools for sexual function have been developed and validated separately for women and men, resulting in gender-specific screening tools. In order to fill in this gap, the objective of this study was the translation, adaptation and validation of the Sexual Function Questionnaire- Version 2 (SFQ-V2) into Hungarian, in a gender-neutral language, to make it suitable for both genders.

Methods: A total of 1662 adults were evaluated with the checklist. The items were translated and adapted for both male and female respondents, reformulating in the specific Hungarian gender-neutral vocabulary. An exploratory factor analysis was performed for this new scale, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach’s alpha was used to examine the reliability of the factors. We assumed sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value in the detection of sexual dysfunction.

Results: The Hungarian, gender neutral version of the scale consists of 18 questions and 5 domains: arousal, desire, pain, enjoyment and orgasm. According to our results, the model with 5-factor structure is adequate, in that it was indicated by the model fit indices. Our results have revealed that the SFQ_18 HU has good psychometric properties and may be a useful instrument for assessing of sexual functions.

Conclusions: The use of the instrument both in clinical practice and/or research can be effective, while the administration and interpretation of scores is easy and not time consuming. The proposed questionnaire, SFQ18_HU is conceptualized as a screening scale or checklist, not a diagnostic instrument.

Keywords: sexual function, desire, arousal, enjoyment, pain, orgasm.

Abstract

Adolescent sexual and reproductive health indicators are very worrying in sub-Saharan Africa. In Togo, for the 2020-2021 school year, 1,244 girls dropped out of school due to early pregnancy (Republic of Togo, 2022). This article aims to make a psychological analysis of the adoption of risky sexual behaviors of adolescents in Togo. To do this, we have conducted an exploratory study with five (05) adolescents received in psychological interview using the all-comers method. The results reveal that romantic attachment and sexual curiosity promote early sexuality. But sex education from parents delays the age of first sexual intercourse. With regard to multiple sexual partners, it is favored by low partner abandonment anxiety. For the non-systematic use of condoms, the reasons are diversified according to gender. Thus, for boys, strong sexual arousal contributes to non-systematic condom use, while girls explain it by strong abandonment anxiety. Furthermore, our results also reveal that the adoption of risky sexual behaviors has consequences on the psychological state of adolescents. Given the small size of our sample, it is necessary to conduct a study on a large population in order to identify the relevant psychological factors. This will enable an adolescent-centered approach to improve adolescent sexual health in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract

The confrontation with the controversial construct of sex addiction reveals not only the heterogeneity of the group of those affected, but also the multitude of aspects that must be taken into account when determining whether this is a singled out, independent disorder or not. Clinical practice experiences also highlight the diversity of relevant influencing factors to consider, as well as the importance of maladaptive coping mechanisms that sustain addiction. The case study presented in this paper was deliberately chosen because clinical cases have repeatedly shown that these two areas, the lack of privacy and the lack of access to their own feelings, play a decisive role in the development of addictions in patients, as well as in the maintenance of this addiction. Therefore, it requires increased attention in therapy.

Abstract

Introduction: The global prevalence (pooled prevalence) of mental illnesses in children and adolescents is 13.4%, the prevalence of anxiety disorders is 6.5%, of depressive disorders 2.6%, and of activity and attention disorders 3.4 %.

Materials and Methods: This research represents a 4-year retrospective study, including cases of continuous hospitalization, conducted in the Bistrita Emergency County Hospital, paediatrics’ department. The cases with the main discharge diagnostic code F were selected. The aim of the study was to analyse the diagnoses from a statistical and psychotherapeutic point of view.

Results: In the case of patients with the main diagnosis coded with the letter F, the relative value (RV) of the case is higher than the patient complexity index (PCI) of the section in most cases, in

other words the complexity of these cases is higher than the average complexity of the section’s cases. The length of stay index (LOS) for psychiatric patients is most often a lower value than the average length of hospitalization (ALOS), or the length of hospitalization of psychiatric cases is shorter than the average length of hospitalization of the entire department. The most frequent group F diagnoses found are: F98.9 - Unspecified behavioral and emotional disorders with onset usually in childhood and adolescence, F98.8 - Other specified disorders of behavioral and emotional disorders with onset usually in childhood and adolescence, F90 .1 - Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, predominantly hyperactive type , F90.0 - Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, predominantly inattentive type, F92.0 - Depressive conduct disorder, F41.0 - Panic disorder (paroxysmal episodic anxiety) without agoraphobia, F71.0 - Moderate mental retardation with declaration of a minimal or no behavioral impairments, F90.0 - Disturbance of activity and attention, F93.8 - Other emotional disorders of childhood, F98.0 - Nonorganic enuresis.

Conclusions: Diagnoses labelled F98 (Other behavioral and emotional disorders with usual onset in childhood and adolescence) were the most common. The complexity and non-specificity of pathologies can justify the importance of some psychotherapeutic interventions among diagnosed patients both during the respective episode of hospitalization and especially after discharge, for the good recovery and psycho-emotional development of children.

Abstract

Objective To evaluate and compare postoperative sexual functioning following total (TH) versus subtotal hysterectomy (STH).

Design A longitudinal, prospective and comparative study in women undergoing hysterectomy for benign diseases in Ibn El Jazzar Hospital, Kairouan in Tunisia.

Sample Sixty women undergoing hysterectomy for benign disease.

Main outcome measures Sexual functioning evaluation using the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) before the operation and after 6 months.

Results Following surgery, significant improvement in sexual functioning according to both scales. In fact, the mean total score of the ASEX scale went from 25.14 to

21.15 and from 11,99 to 19,31 for the FSFI. The average time to resume sexuality postoperatively was 50 days. No significant difference was found in these results between total and subtotal hysterectomy.

Conclusion Hysterectomy, whether total or subtotal, has a positive impact on the overall sexual satisfaction of the patients especially in those with an impaired sexuality before surgery. There were no statistically significant differences in sexual function between the two groups TH versus STH. Therefore, cervix preservation for the purpose of improving overall sexual satisfaction cannot be recommended.

Abstract

There are numerous studies focusing on the digital world in hopes of better understanding how it influences socialization between individuals. Though, fewer studies look at the continuity of relationships from the digital environment to the physical environment. The current paper examines the continuity of social relationships between digital and physical environments on a sample compose of 996 video game enthusiasts, focusing on extroversion as a variable affecting socialization among video game players. Using the social capital paradigm to distinguish between online and offline relationships, we investigate the correlation between extroversion and social capital in both contexts. Our findings indicate a positive correlation between extroversion and both online and offline social capital, with a stronger association observed in offline social capital. The results suggest that extroverted individuals are more likely to integrate their digital friendships into their physical social environments, or to migrate offline relationships into the online medium.

Abstract

The current paper investigates gender disparities in digital competence among N=1526 rural middle school students from the Republic of Moldova by employing the Youth Digital Skills Indicator (yDSI). While prior research has highlighted gender's role in digital exclusion, recent studies in both developed and developing countries suggest narrowing gender gaps. Similarly, the current study findings reveal no statistically significant gender differences in Information Navigation and Processing, Communication and Interaction, and Problem-Solving. However, significant disparities emerge in Digital Content Creation [t(1425) = 4.20, p = .000] and Safety [t(1421) = 2.49, p = .000], favoring girls. Boys' lower scores in digital safety warrant further investigation due to potential implications for their exposure to digital threats. These findings underscore the evolving landscape of gender-related digital skills in Moldovan rural middle schools.

Abstract

Affectional expression plays an important role in the dyadic adjustment in couples. Itmeasures the individual's satisfaction towards emotionality and sexuality expression in the relationship. This study aims to analyse the association between strain and affectional expression. We selected 30 patients who declared themselves strained for the experimental group and 30 patients who declared not to be strained for the control group. We analysed the association between strain and agreement on sex relations and also the association between strain and feeling too tired for sex. Microsoft Excel and MedCalc were used for statistics. The statistical analysis showed that subjects who declared themselves strained at the

moment of evaluation had 14,5 more times disagreements with their partner regarding sex relations [OR=14,5, 95% CI (1,7177-122,4), P=0,0140]. Even though strained subjects were 1,96 times more tired for sex than subjects who did not consider themselves strained at the moment, the value did not reach statistical significance [OR=1,96, 95% CI (0,7023-5,4788), P=0,1986]. The affectional expression is being disturbed by the current state of strain, especially the couples; agreement on intimate relations. In order to avoid separation and divorce, there is need of psychotherapy, support and campaigns targeting strain, anxiety, depression, work-life balance and importance of sleep.

Abstract

Delayed ejaculation (DE) is a rare and poorly defined form of male sexual dysfunction. It is probably the least researched sexual disorder due to its low prevalence rates, affecting 1-4% of men. Individuals with this condition suffer from difficulty or inability to reach ejaculation latency and diminished control. Consequently, patients and their partners experience lower sexual satisfaction, affecting their overall relationship satisfaction negatively. The current case study is aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on the definition and explanations of male delayed ejaculation. Additionally, to investigate the efficacy of CBT techniques on men with (DE). Findings indicate that ejaculation control is negatively correlated with sexual performance and positively correlated with relationship intimacy. Following CBT sessions on a weekly basis, reduction of performance anxiety in subject 1 contributed in ejaculation control enhancement of (170%) and (200%) at post-intervention and follow-up. Whereas, promoting relationship intimacy in subject 2 lead to a growth of (146%) and (230%) at similar evaluation assessment. The relevance of this outcome is providing a significant relevance to CBT techniques in treating (DE) and avoiding the development of other psychological or sexual disorders. For future research, we suggest including a larger sample size in order to improve the study’s statistical power, strengthen scores’ accuracy and reduce the likelihood of possible errors.

Abstract

The aim of the present study case was to show the evidence of the associations between sexual dysfunction in men and early maladaptive schemas, automatic thoughts. The major objective of this study was to identify the role of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) in male sexual functioning and clarify the way these cognitive structures differentiate men with and without sexual dysfunction. The participants of this study completed three measures evaluating YSQ, Sexual Modes Questionnaire (SMQ) and The Questionnaire of Cognitive Schema Activation in Sexual Context. Findings supported the hypothesis of a typical cognitive pattern in men with sexual difficulties. Men with sexual dysfunction reported more dependence/incompetence early maladaptive schemas and activated more difference, helpless, and particularly incompetence schemas in hypothetical unsuccessful sexual situations, in comparison to sexually healthy men. Male sexual dysfunction has long been regarded as being common. Recently, awareness of normal male sexual function and causes of sexual dysfunction have become better understood, and more effective treatments are available. Male sexual dysfunction includes erectile dysfunction, diminished libido and abnormal ejaculation. Measurement of this study was conducted separately for the dysfunctional and the control group. This study was aimed at examining the relation among the sexual performance, emotional responses, activated maladaptive schemas. Men having sexual difficulties were compared with sexually functional men to find out how the two groups of men differ from each other. The aim of this study was to see the connection between sexual dysfunction at men and maladaptive schemas/automatic thoughts. Sexually heathy men (N=3)  and men with sexual dysfunction (N=3) were compared.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the intricate process of reconstructing sexuality in the case of female survivors of trafficking and sexual abuse, presenting sex therapy as an effective therapeutic method that addresses the needs of these women. This paper investigates the profound impact of sexual trauma on victims, highlighting its long-term effects. Starting from the general context of trafficking and sexual abuse, the paper reveals the characteristics of these traumatic experiences and analyzes how they influence the survivor’s subsequent sexual relationships. Through sex therapy-based interventions, ways in which these women can regain control over their own bodies and sexuality are explored. By integrating current research and clinical practices, the paper aims to contribute to understanding the reconstruction of survivor’s sexuality. Additionally, this work emphasizes the imperative of ongoing research and policy development to support these highly vulnerable victims.

Abstract

The work verifies the hypothesis if there is a circular causal relationship between sexual inhibition and couple problems. Couple relationships are, for many researchers, the closest relationships that an adult develops during his life. The interest in the dyadic relationship is increased by the possible repercussions of the dysfunctions in the intimate space. When the couple does not develop or maintain an expected degree of intimacy, its dissolution is likely, as lack of closeness has been identified as the most common reason for divorce and separation. Two case studies, couple partners in the process of systemic psychotherapy and 20 responding subjects in the evaluation by: Questionnaire for mutual appreciation of sexual-affective needs and attitudes, adapted by I. Mitrofan, 1984 after the Inventory of attitudes towards sexuality – Eysenck, Scale for measuring marital satisfaction, Spanier. Satisfaction in the relationship is positively and moderately correlated with the level of sexual-affective satisfaction of the couple (r = 0.39; p ≤ 0.001), thus confirming the working hypothesis. From the answers given, it can also be seen that in couples where communication is authentic on a digital and analog level, the degree of trust between partners is higher, the level of sexual inhibition is lower and respectively the quality of life as a couple is better. The research within the work confirms the formulated hypothesis - sexual dysfunction and couple problems influence each other, in a circular causality.

Abstract

In a Romanian society where the complete lack of sexual education and religious constraints, in the past, have been replaced by easy access to pornography, erectile dysfunctions (ED) in youth disturb the lives of many men, increasing the level of performance anxiety, even leading to panic attacks, and preventing them from having a fulfilling existence. More than 20 years ago, specialists considered that psychogenic factors of erectile dysfunction accounted for 80% as causal determinants. Now, studies on ED have demonstrated that the most common causes are of an organic nature – namely vascular - 32%, urological - 28%, neurological - 21%, diabetes, degenerative and metabolic diseases - 19%, for age groups over 40 years. Clients are increasingly open to the idea of seeking the specialized help of a sex therapist when faced with such situations. Analytic existential psychotherapeutic intervention has proven to be effective, as will be observed in the presented case.

Abstract

This study focuses on the sexual behavior of children with autism, providing a detailed account of behavioral aspects in this specific developmental domain. Using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methods, the research aims to investigate and understand how children with autism exhibit sexual behaviors within the unique context of their disorder. The diversity of sexual behaviors in this group of children is explored by thorough observation and assessment, while identifying potential influences of individual and environmental factors. Applied Behavioural Therapy (ABA) is an evidence-based, effective and scientifically founded intervention for autistic children. ABA is focussed on understanding and changing unwanted, problem behaviors by using behavioral principles. The therapy is tailored to the individual needs of the child, aiming to develop social, communication, and academic skills.

Abstract

This research paper delves into the depth and complexity of the psychosocial impact in adult life of childhood sexual abuse, with a focus on sexual abuse without penetration. Childhood sexual abuse is a major trauma that can have long-term effects on mental health, interpersonal relationships, and adaptation to various aspects of adult life. Through the analysis of existing research and case studies, this paper highlights the various consequences and influences that can persist in the lives of adults who were victims of sexual abuse in their childhood. We have demonstrated the symptomatic emotional, behavioral, and psychophysical manifestations specific to anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic disorders of the subjects studied. Difficulties in establishing and maintaining intimate relationships were observed, as well as tendencies to distort reality. The relevance of this study comes from the focus on sexual abuse without penetration, which has been shown to be easy to ignore, both by the victim and the expert (psychologist, psychotherapist, counselor, social worker). As a result, the consequences in adult life may be erroneously attributed to other types of trauma, which substantially increases the risk of re-traumatizing the victims. Future research can focus on expanding the statistical sample and moving towards quantitative methods, which would increase accuracy and representativeness for larger populations.

Abstract

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a very common sexual dysfunction of men, but its ethology remains uncertain. It has long been hypothesized that some lifestyle factors are associated with sexual problems in general and have also been proposed as risk factors for PE. This study examines associations between premature ejaculation (PE) and key healthy lifestyle factors (stress management, sleep, healthy diet and exercise). Normal sexual function has been described as a biopsychosocial process involving an interaction of psychological, endocrine, vascular and neurological systems, and these systems are likely to be disrupted by lifestyle choices. While pharmacotherapy for premature ejaculation has been well researched, there are not many studies regarding the effects of adopting a healthy lifestyle on PE. The majority of scientific studies  illustrate the correlation of a single lifestyle factor with PE. Scientific studies addressing multiple factors at the same time are rare. The present study aims to highlight the idea that by looking at the elements involved in a healthy lifestyle one by one and improving each of them as much as possible and all of them together, a significant, noticeable improvement in PD can be achieved through a cumulative effect. It is a comparative and synthetic analysis of more than 120 studies and thematic articles from 7 electronic bibliographic databases of the scientific literature.  Between 3 and 14 studies and articles were comparatively analyzed in terms of cross-sectional associations between each lifestyle factor and PD and also over 40 articles with an overview of PD. Data from over 68 scientific studies (between 3-14 studies for each individual factor and from 3 studies in which multiple factors were considered simultaneously) provided evidence that healthy lifestyle factors are important for the improvement of this sexual dysfunction. Tobacco smoking (past and current), alcohol consumption and physical activity had dose-dependent associations with premature ejaculation. The risk of PE increased with higher levels of smoking and decreased with higher physical activity. Increased alcohol consumption was associated with a higher risk of PE. Participation in physical activity was associated with a lower risk of PE. There was some evidence that a healthy diet was linked to a lower risk of PE. Sleep deprivation was associated with a higher risk of PD. The prevalence of premature ejaculation symptoms was higher in participants with unhealthy lifestyle (danger zone). Improving lifestyle factors appears to be a useful low-risk approach to reduce the risk of PE. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, balanced diet, sufficient rest, stress management and open communication, may be a valuable component in treating premature ejaculation, contributing to improved sexual and overall health.

Abstract

Models and researches related to the Sexual Self-Concept from the 21st century are based on a framework developed by Buzwell and Rosenthal (1996), with six defined dimensions subsequently developed. The Sexual Self-Concept represents a complex construct situated on multiple levels, including all conceptions and feelings individuals have regarding themselves as a sexual being (Rye, 2023). My scientific work explores the components, the factors of the Sexual Self-Concept, their relationships with sexual functions, and the interactions between these elements. The models I have analyzed and the research hypotheses I have previously examined suggest that the Sexual Self-Concept has impacts on the sexual functions. The dimensions of the Sexual Self-Concept consist of various magnitudes, and their effects are not entirely clear; however, studies indicate relationships between these dimensions and their influence on sexual functioning.

Abstract

The work follows the positive influence of the elements/techniques present in a form of non-directive psychotherapy on the awareness of a sexual dysfunction and on the openness in therapy to work on this segment; also, the aim is to present the positive effects of focusing on clients with sexual dysfunctions. Eight clients were observed during a psychotherapeutic process that lasted over 20 sessions. All eight clients came for psychotherapy invoking elements of anxiety, wanting to more effectively manage their emotional area in couple relationships and the stress related to professional life. In the first sessions, dysfunctional elements in sexual life were not presented. After laying the foundation of an authentic therapeutic process through unconditional positive acceptance, empathy, and congruence - central elements in person-centered psychotherapy, the clients also began to explore the area of sexuality where we could observe what does not work and so, steps could be taken towards awareness and accepting the presence of elements associated with sexual dysfunction. From this point of psychotherapy, it was also possible to work with the dysfunctional elements in the sexual area through the focusing technique, the clients being able to connect at a deeper level with their body. The awareness/acceptance of a problem related to sexuality also needs a space where the person feels safe, to be able to work together with the psychotherapist also in the area of sex therapy. Focusing, through deeper bodily awareness, comes to the psychotherapist's aid when we have elements present in sexual dysfunctions.
