It's the end of an era!

Three-and-a-half years after MS Dhoni bowed out of international cricket, the World Cup-winning captain's No. 7 jersey is also consigned to history. The jersey won't be available to any player as the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to retire it.

Dhoni called it a day in international cricket on August 15, 2020, via a message on his social media accounts. The 41-year-old still remains active in franchise cricket, and led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a resounding victory in the last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dhoni, among the successful captains of Team India, led the squad to historic title wins in the inaugural T20 World Cup as well as the 2011 ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy 2013. Captain Cool, as MSD is known, wore the lucky No. 7 jersey for all games.

Dhoni is the second person to be accorded this honour by the BCCI. In 2017, the cricketing body had officially retired the No. 10 jersey worn by batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, as a mark of honour to his exemplary career and contributions to the game.

The Indian Express on Friday reported that the BCCI has informed players in the national team, especially the debutants, that they no longer have the option of picking jersey with numbers associated with Tendulkar and Dhoni.

“The young players and current Indian team players have been told not to pick MS Dhoni’s Number 7 jersey. The BCCI has decided to retire Dhoni’s T-shirt for his contribution to the game. A new player can’t get No. 7, and No. 10 was already off the list of available numbers,” the Indian Express reported, quoting an unnamed BCCI official.

When Mumbai fast bowler Shardul Thakur made his India debut, he had briefly donned the No. 10 shirt. He was soon trolled by fans on social media.
