Amid a bloodbath in the Indian stock markets, 694 stocks hit their lower circuits while 292 number of stocks crashed to their 52-week lows on the BSE. Out of the 3,934 stocks that were trading today on India's oldest exchange, 3,347 declined while the advances were at 490. Nearly over 100 stocks were unmoved.

Among the stocks which hit their lower circuits include Inox Wind, J&K Bank, Alok Industries, TV18 Broadcast, One 97 Communications (Paytm), NBCC, Swan Energy and Schneider Electric and Shakti Pumps.

The market capitalisation of the BSE listed company fell by 30 lakh crore to 3,95.50 lakh crore as the S&P BSE Sensex today crashed to the day's low of 70,234.43, falling by over 6,200 points from the closing of 76,468.78 on Monday. It finally ended at 72,186.49, down by 4282.29 points or 5.60%.

There were a few silver linings too with 119 stocks hitting their 52-week high while 117 hit their upper circuits.

Today's fall was on account of the general election results trends which show Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA alliance scoring much lower than what Saturday's exit polls had suggested. On the contrary, India alliance which was shown to be contending with much lower tally managed to comfortably cross 225.

While these are only initial trends and may change at the time of final count.

Riding on the exuberance of the exit polls on Saturday, Sensex hit a record high of 76,738.89.

Sensex and Nifty erased all of the gains recorded on Monday's session as exit poll euphoria had predicted 350+ seats for NDA, a seemingly far-fetched prospect. The total market capitalisation of all BSE-listed stocks fell by nearly Rs 21.5 lakh crore late in the morning.

But this may just be the beginning of a short-term downtrend in the market if NDA's seat tally turns out to be below the 300-level, analysts say.

"Following the exit poll results, the market had factored in around 350 seats for NDA and now if it falls below 300 then it would be a big disappointment for bulls," said Kranthi Bathini of WealthMills Securities.

Some analysts are also of the opinion that the market could be over-reacting to early trends.
