    Mumbai was hit by heavy rainfall early this morning, with some areas receiving over 300 mm between 1 am and 7 am. This deluge led to severe waterlogging and disrupted daily life across the city. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working tirelessly to manage the waterlogging and ensure the safety of residents.

    Mumbai Rains: Commuters Struggle with Train Delays

    The downpour caused widespread train delays, affecting commuters citywide. Western Railway's suburban trains experienced delays of up to 10 minutes due to water on the tracks between Matunga Road and Dadar. High-capacity water pumps were deployed to clear the tracks. Services between CSMT and Thane operated on the slow line, with delays reported on the Thane-Kasara and Thane-Karjat routes. Central Railway also canceled some long-distance trains due to waterlogged tracks.

    Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) faced disruptions due to weather-related congestion and reduced visibility. Airlines have cautioned passengers to check their flight statuses as delays and cancellations are anticipated.

    Morning rush-hour traffic was heavily congested on the Eastern and Western Express highways. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) reported many buses were rerouted to avoid waterlogged areas, including Worli, Kurla East, King's Circle, Dadar, and Vidyavihar Railway Station.

    Mumbai Rains: Schools and colleges closed

    In response to the severe weather conditions, all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges were ordered to remain closed. The BMC announced that these institutions would also declare holidays for the second session as a precautionary measure. "As a precautionary measure and to avoid any inconvenience to the students, all municipal, government, and private schools and colleges in Mumbai metropolis are also declaring holidays for the second session," stated the BMC.

    The BMC reported that Colaba received 83.8 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 267.9 mm in the last 24 hours. The city received a total of 2547 mm of rainfall, accounting for 27% of the average annual rainfall. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani is overseeing the situation from the disaster control room, with Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and other officials active at various locations.

    The BMC received 39 complaints of falling branches and reported one incident of a house collapse in the eastern suburbs. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in both cases. Additionally, a small landslide occurred in the Vikroli Park site area this morning, with work underway to remove the debris.

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan region, warning of continued heavy rainfall and potential flooding. Vikhroli’s Veer Savarkar Marg Municipal School and MCMCR Powai recorded over 315 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. The IMD predicts more rains for the city over the week, with light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms expected across Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and other regions. Residents are advised to stay indoors unless necessary and avoid believing in rumors.
