Berkeley Public Library Comes to the Garden, and Vice Versa!

By Tamika Whitenack

This past summer the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley partnered with Berkeley Public Library to offer Storytime in the Garden. On Monday mornings, families gathered beneath our beloved Grandmother Oak to sing songs and listen to garden-themed children’s books read aloud by ESY educators. Following the stories, families were invited to stay and explore the garden. We loved having young ones delight in mulberries, meet our chickens, and wander through the flowers and food crops. Families were also offered a variety of fresh, organic garden produce to take home.

But that’s not all—our collaboration goes even further! In addition to the Storytime series, our garden team shared an abundance of hand-grown flowers and produce with the Central Library. A beautiful selection of ESY’s own greens, fruits, herbs, and flowers was distributed as part of the library’s free summer lunch program.

We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the Library this autumn. Starting in September, Storytime will happen on Saturdays, alongside our Garden Work Parties. Get all the dates and details—we can’t wait to see you there!
