Another announcement of being excited? No! We are not excited about this...we are just saving the world! 🌍 This is a spoiler alert that Beamline is becoming a bigger #fund! In this critical moment when the planet needs all the possible innovative minds, Beamline has decided to build a bigger fund to pack the cleantech future heroes. This is also the reason why we’ve joined Estonian Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (EstVCA) as a member, as an emerging fund. EstVCA is the perfect match with Beamline - only together can we funnel the money to the right place, to clean innovation. All that for the future we want to leave behind for our children and the next generations. 💚 Our mission is to develop the cleantech sector and we are particularly interested in pre-seed cleantech #startups that demonstrate substantial potential for #sustainable growth and breakthrough in various cleantech topics, for instance, innovative solutions for energy production and storage, waste management, transport, food industry and construction. During our team’s time on Saaremaa, we Aneth, Anton, Krista, Jana, and Indrek visited one of the participants in our Deeptech Batch, the startup Vetik. The friendly founder, Tanel Ilmjärv, gave us a tour of their laboratory and the facilities where their work is carried out. Wanna know cool facts? 💡 Vetik is developing biostimulants from local red seaweed (Furcellaria lumbricalis) for agriculture to enhance plant growth in a sustainable way. 💡 Their advanced process allows for the simultaneous extraction of plant biostimulants for agriculture, red pigments for cosmetics, food, and textiles, as well as cellulose biomass with gelling properties for bioplastics, biofertilizers, animal feed, and much more. 💡 Vetik has an exclusive license to harvest large stocks of red seaweed, Furcellaria lumbricalis, in Estonian waters. Continuing the introductory series about our startups in the current Deeptech Batch! This time we deep-dived into the soul & heart of 🌾 Sutu 🌾 - a #biodegradable alternative to replace #plastic. 💚 Tell us a bit about your startup and the problem it aims to solve. What inspired you to start this company? Sutu’s mission is quite clear - we help to save the planet. We were first inspired by the environmental impact of single-use plastics & the EU's push to ban them. "As a nature lover and material scientist, I saw an opportunity to create a truly sustainable alternative," says Ailet Õis-Saar (CEO & co-founder of Sutu). Our dream is to replace harmful fossil-based plastics in everyday products with this eco-friendly option. 🌍 How does your technology contribute to environmental sustainability? Sutu material is from reed, a plant that grows worldwide in coastal areas and needs to be harvested yearly anyway. So, from one side we’re doing the coastal areas a favor and from the other side, we’re providing an opportunity to produce bio-plastic products with a 13 times smaller carbon footprint compared with traditional fossil plastic. How does your solution differ from existing alternatives in the market? 1️⃣ Unique Reed-Based Material: Our foundation is reed, a remarkable resource that we like to refer to as "Nordic bamboo." Reed grows abundantly without the need for additional land or cultivation. Unlike some bioplastics, it doesn't compete with food sources, making it a truly sustainable choice. 2️⃣ Versatility and Performance: Sutu material is biodegradable, so it won't clog up landfills or pollute our oceans as fossil plastic does. Plus, it's incredibly versatile - we can use Sutu material to make everything from cards to food containers, from cutlery to 3D filament 3️⃣ Local Sourcing and Production: Sutu's key ingredient, reed, is a globally abundant resource. 🤝 Gratitude to mentors & supporters! This event is dedicated to the program that Beamline Accelerator is implementing in collaboration with Baltic Innovation Agency and Sparkup Tartu Science Park. You definitely need to be there if you're a founder of a startup in the fields of ⚡ energy 🧱 construction 🌱 climate resilience But honestly, if you work with such startups, are an advisor, or have a community of innovators, it's also worth attending this event. Highlights from Beamline Summer Days x 🌱 Idea Jungle 🌱 @ I Land Sound Festival It was again this time of the year when we opened our pop-up summer office on the biggest island in Estonia - Saaremaa. We gathered to talk about Beamline's strategy, upcoming busy months & of course, celebrated Beamline 3 year birthday! 🎉 It was a perfect blend of productive brainstorming sessions and joyful moments with a hot tub & sauna. 👩💻 🛀 At I Land Sound Festival we brought the true Beamline spirit to the Idea Jungle with a mini-Beamline program: we mentored green ideas & heard out passionate pitches to our jury. The creativity & innovation of festival attendees were truly inspiring! 🏆 The winning idea was a brilliant concept for outside seating areas powered by solar energy (or recycled accumulators). These seating areas offer a place to relax but also provide free phone charging - sustainability & convenience 2in1!
