Wade Patrick Elliott (born 14 December, 1978 in Southampton, England)[1] is an English professional footballer, playing for Burnley. He plays mainly as a right winger but can play as a right-back. He began playing football as a youth player for Southampton before joining non-league Bashley. He began his professional career at Bournemouth after joing from Bashley for £5,000 and after 5 years he joined Burnley where he won 2 player of the year awards and scored the only goal in the Play-Off final elevating his team to the Premier League.

Playing career

Youth and Non-League

Elliott began playing football as a youth player at Southampton where he also represented England School Boys.[1] He was released from the Southampton youth set up when he was 16 and instead went on to do his A-levels.[2] He carried on playing football at non-league Bashley while studying at University and was spotted by ex-Bournemouth player Jimmy Case who organised a trial match for him at Bournemouth,[3] he then trained with the team over the Christmas period and signed for a fee of £5,000 in February 1999.[4]

Bournemouth

After joining the League One side towards the end of the 1998/1999 season Elliott scored 3 goals in the 12 games he played. In the following seasons at the club he began to have more and more of an impact, winning the player of the year award in his first full season.[1] He was out of contract at the end of the 2003/2004 season and eventually signed a one year contract extension, many of Bournemouth's other top players failed to agree new contracts and left the club.[5] In his last season at the club he played 51 games and scored 5 goals, with his contract expired he was eventually signed by Burnley, a team which he had impressed in an FA cup game that season. He signed a three year deal at the club along with fellow Bournemouth players Garreth O'Connor and John Spicer.[1]

Burnley

Elliott's first season at Burnley got off to a slow start, he made just 23 starts for the club and scored 3 goals. However in his next two seasons he became one of the clubs most influential players, winning play of the year awards for two consecutive seasons.[1] It was in the 2007/2008 season that he commited his future to the club by signing a 3 year contract extension, keeping him at the club untill the end of the 2011 season.[5] In the following season he was instrumental in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League and capped off the season by scoring the only goal in the Play-Off final. The 25 yard curling shot captured much media attention with multiple references to him scoring the goal that had the potential to earn Burnley up to £60 million in the Premier League.[2][6] Elliott began his first Premier League season by scoring the only goal in the home win against Everton, again leading Elliott to grab headlines.[7]
