Gunhild Margareta Hallin Ekerot (born 20 February 1931 in Karlskoga) is a Swedish opera singer, composer and actress.[1][2] Hallin became a member of the Swedish Society of Composers in 1990.[3]

Life and career

Hallin made her debut as a student at the Operahögskolan at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm in 1955 as Rosina in Rossini's Barberaren in Sevilla.[4] She was employed there in 1956 and after that worked at the opera with roles such as Zerbinetta in Ariadne på Naxos by Richard Strauss, the title role of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Sophie in Rosenkavaljeren by Strauss, Leonora in Verdi's Trubaduren, Amelia in his Maskeradbalen, the title role in his Aida, and Gilda in his Rigoletto.[3] Her last role at the opera was the title role in Cherubini's Médée.[3][5]

Other operatic parts of her career between the 1950s to 1970s were the Blind Poet in Karl-Birger Blomdahl's Aniara,[6][7] Anne Trulove in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, the title role in Verdi's La traviata, Therese in Lars Johan Werle's Drömmen om Thérèse,[8] and the Queen Mother in Georg Joseph Vogler's Gustaf Adolf och Ebba Brahe.[9][10]

She has performed at other locations, including Glyndebourne, Florence, Vienna, Hamburg, Moscow, London and Copenhagen, and toured in the Soviet Union. In the mid-1980s she started composing,[11] self-taught with encouragement from the composer Eberhard Eyser; her debut as a composer was in 1986 with poems by Nils Ferlin, Harry Martinson, Werner Aspenström and Alf Henrikson, which she performed at Drottningholm's castle chapel.[12] She has also set to music works by August Strindberg for the chamber opera Fröken Julie in 1990, Den Starkare in 1991 and Ett drömspel in 1992.[12]

Hallin was named chamber singer in 1966 and was awarded the Jussi Björlingstipdentiet (Jussi Björling scholarship) in 1970. She became a professor of opera in 2001. Hallin was awarded the Gunn Wållgren Award in 2006. From 1951 to 1956 she was married to violinist Inge Boström; the couple had one daughter together who was born in 1952.[2][13] Her second marriage was to Bengt Ekerot, with whom she has one son who was born in 1966.[2]
