"New York" is the twenty-second episode and season finale of the second season of the American musical television series Glee, and the 44th overall. It first aired on May 24, 2011 on Fox in the United States. The McKinley High School glee club, New Directions, finishes in 12th place at the Nationals competition in New York City. The episode features an appearance by Patti LuPone as herself and guest stars Jonathan Groff, Cheyenne Jackson, and Charice.[1]
Plot
The McKinley High School glee club, New Directions, travels to New York City to compete in the Nationals competition. In the hotel, glee club director Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) tasks the students with writing two original songs to perform on stage. Will leaves with the excuse of filling out paperwork to visit the stage of April Rhodes' musical, CrossRhodes. He performs "Still Got Tonight" on stage. A security guard overhears the performance and tells Will that he has real talent. The New Directions are disturbed by rumors leaked by Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson) about Will's plan to leave the glee club to sing on Broadway. Will explains that he has fulfilled his dream of singing on a Broadway stage and chooses to stay with New Directions.
After spending hours trying to compose music, Brittany (Heather Morris), Artie (Kevin McHale), and Puck (Mark Salling) only come up with "My Cup", reminiscent of Rachel's (Lea Michele) previous composition, "My Headband". Seeking fresh inspiration for their songwriting, they all sneak out of the hotel room to explore New York City while singing a mash-up of "I Love New York" and "New York, New York".
Encouraged by his fellow male glee club members, Finn (Cory Monteith) asks Rachel on a date in Central Park. The two enjoy dinner at Sardi's where they meet Patti LuPone. As the date draws to a close with Sam (Chord Overstreet), Puck, Artie, and Mike (Harry Shum, Jr.) serenading the two with "Bella Notte", Rachel feels torn between Finn and her dreams of being on Broadway, and leaves after refusing to kiss Finn. After breakfast at Tiffany's, Rachel and Kurt (Chris Colfer) sneak onto the stage of Wicked and sing a duet of "For Good". Rachel realizes that her true love is Broadway and vows to return to New York City with Kurt after graduation to study.
At Nationals Rachel runs into a nervous Sunshine Corazon (Charice) in the bathroom. Rachel apologizes to Sunshine for previously making her feel unwelcomed at McKinley. Admitting her jealousy for Sunshine's talent, Rachel corrects her mistake by reassuring Sunshine as she steps out onto the stage to open for Vocal Adrenaline with "As Long As You're There".
As the New Directions are about to go on stage, Rachel professes her love to Finn, but is still torn between her career aspirations and love. At the end of their duet of "Pretending", the audience is silenced in awe as Rachel and Finn kiss. New Directions closes their performance with "Light Up the World". A jealous Jesse confronts Finn after the performance, deeming the kiss unprofessional and asserting that it will cost them the championship. New Directions does not advance to the top 10 showcase round of competition, finishing in 12th place.
Back in Ohio, Kurt recounts his experience in New York City to Blaine (Darren Criss). They then profess their love to each other and Kurt states that "It's been a good year for Kurt Hummel". It is revealed that Sam and Mercedes (Amber Riley) are now dating in secret. Santana (Naya Rivera) and Brittany reaffirm their friendship; Brittany tells Santana she loves her more than she's ever loved anyone. Rachel meets up with Finn and the two contemplate their kiss; Finn reminds her that she has a year until graduation and kisses her, and they begin a renewed relationship.
Production
Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) appears for the third time this season after returning in "Prom Queen", and new Vocal Adrenaline coach Dustin Goolsby (Cheyenne Jackson) and his star vocalist Sunshine Corazon (Charice) also make their third appearances. Additional recurring guest stars appearing in the episode include glee club members Mike Chang (Harry Shum, Jr.), Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), and Lauren Zizes (Ashley Fink), and Kurt's boyfriend Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss).[1]
According to Cory Monteith, "We filmed part of our final episode [on location] in New York [City]."[2] Landmarks where the episode was filmed include Times Square,[3] Lincoln Center,[4] the Gershwin Theatre,[5] Central Park,[6] and Sardi's.[7]
