DODS

Hi, GabeIglesia! Just to say I am removing the wikilinks you added to the Dods disambiguation page to conform with the Manual of Style MOS:DABENTRY specifically the bit about: "Include exactly one navigable (blue) link to efficiently guide readers to the most relevant article for that use of the ambiguous term. Do not wikilink any other words in the line." Kerry (talk) 20:38, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I also added DODS as an abbreviation in the Day of Defeat: Source page, as abbreviations aren't supposed to appear in disambiguation pages unless the article itself introduces the abbreviation MOS:DABACRO. But, then I noticed there is a DODS disambiguation page, which might be the better place for the game entry than the Dods disambiguation page. Then I wondered if the abbreviation was DoDS (or some other capitalisation). At which point I thought it better to ask you to decide what the best capitalisation is (I guess the one in common use) and deal with the disambiguation accordingly. What do you reckon? Kerry (talk) 20:52, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kerry! Thank you for fixing that on the disambiguation page. As for the abbreviation suggestion, I believe an appropriate abbreviation for Day of Defeat: Source is DoDS or DoD:S. I think DoD:S is in more common use in the community, although Valve has also referred to it as DoD: Source. Similarly, Counter-Strike: Source, which is also a Source upgrade of its respective game, is often abbreviated as CS:S or CSS, so that should be considered. Steam category

Is there a consensus for adding this category? Steam handles loads of games. This kind of massive editing spree needs some discussion before you waste your time. Try bringing it up at WT:VG. Thanks! Blake (Talk·Edits) 02:53, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think the person you'd want to inquire would be Player017, since it was originally that particular user who launched it. I had assumed the category was already discussed at some particular time and place elsewhere since it was already rolling under way. On that note, a similar situation is with categories that characterize games by platform (Categories for Windows and Xbox Live Arcade, as examples), if we are to consider the same rationale that there are just so many games for that one particular characteristic. Thank you for bringing this to mind though. GabeIglesia (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll talk to him. The thing is, Steam has consistently been a matter of discussion of whether or not it is considered "a platform", and I think the general consensus is that it is a store, not a platform. Thanks, Blake (Talk·Edits) 15:00, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out I was beaten to it, and the category is up for deletion discussion. Blake (Talk·Edits) 15:02, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. Thanks much for referring me to the right place! GabeIglesia (talk) 16:08, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikify has been deprecated

Hi Gabelglesia! Just a friendly note that {{Wikify}} has been deprecated in favor of more specific templates. For example, in Bruce Dinsmore, I replaced {{Wikify section}} with {{Needs table}}.. Happy editing, and happy new year! GoingBatty (talk) 04:28, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding a more appropriate and specific one! It works very well. GabeIglesia (talk) 05:07, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

March 2013

Thank you for trying to keep Wikipedia free of vandalism. However, one or more edits you labeled as vandalism, such as the edit at Classics, are not considered vandalism under Wikipedia policy. Wikipedia has a stricter definition of the word "vandalism" than common usage, and mislabeling edits as vandalism can discourage newer editors. Please read Wikipedia:NOTVAND for more information on what is and is not considered vandalism. Thank you. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 21:23, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Assistant Secretary of State for Conflict and Stabilization Operations requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. reddogsix (talk) 03:33, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Subnautica

Hello GabeIglesia,

Your recent edits to the Subnautica page in my opinion negative, as the article should continue expanding. There is much more to the game than being under development. Wikipedia is not a game guide, but it should have all the details of the gameplay, plot, reception etc. It should be something more like Far cry primal: Far_Cry_Primal or like Ark survival evolved Ark%3A_Survival_Evolved. Although the article DOES look nice, with one paragraph, there NEEDS to be more. Please consider letting more edits pass through.

Sincerly,

Wobblytabletop (talk) 13:11, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, @Wobblytabletop:. My apologies if I appear to be obstructing your attempted additions. By no means am I trying to discourage them. There are, however, conventions regarding the content and style of video game articles on Wikipedia (which differs from the game's respective Wikia). Here is a list of helpful guidelines - I recommend looking at the "what's appropriate" and "what's inappropriate" sections.
Regarding your latest additions, I deemed the last edit to be unhelpful for a variety of reasons.
1. We don't use second-person view in Wikipedia.
2. It's considered bad form to leave empty "To be filled later" sections, even if there are intentions to fill it eventually. When content is ready to be added, it can be added, but until then there's no need to leave an empty section - just add it as you go and when it's ready. As the game continues to develop and more relevant content will become available (e.g. critical reception, etc.), the article will naturally grow. Alternatively, you could also use the "Section under construction" template if you wish to remind readers and editors of the article's developing nature. Typically though, this is for already substantially-filled articles that are undergoing a major overhaul (see Criticism of the United States government for an example), as opposed to a brand new article without prior substance.
3. As far as substance goes, I felt the details you added were pretty extraneous plot details for a Wikipedia article (details about the protagonist's space mission, etc). Such would be more appropriate for the article's Wikia, in my opinion. If anything, it doesn't need to be an excessive explanation in the Wikipedia article's lead paragraph.
Thinking it over, I can see the deletionist within me got ahead of myself and I was a bit too harsh in undoing your entire edit. So I'll restore your content but edit it down rather than delete it entirely. Hope this helps. Happy to continue working with you to make the article better. GabeIglesia (talk) 19:41, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your understanding GabeIglesia, I admit also putting a second person perspective on an article is a bad decision. It makes the article less informative (Which of course is the purpose of Wikipedia). My future edits in Wikipedia will be more cautious of the rules and recommandations.

Thank you for your time, Wobblytabletop (talk) 00:00, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Subnautica main.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Subnautica main.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:50, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

US Visa policy intro

The first sentence of the intro is confusing because it sounds like all non-US citizens need a visa to enter the US. It should indicate that some require entry visas but some do not. This misunderstanding causes many phone and email inquiries at US embassies - in Paris the US embassy answers the same question around a dozen times each day via email or telephone, about whether or not French citizens need a visa to enter the US. This first sentence is key to making it clear that some do nationalities do not need visas to go to the US. 81.64.61.5 (talk) 19:33, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for comment/editing: Bruce Heyman

Hey there GabeIglesia - I recently posted some cited information about U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman on his article's talk page, with the hope that an editor might want to look it over/incorporate some it into the article. I do work for the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, which is why I do not wish to simply add the info to the article myself (we do want to honor Wikipedia's guidelines about conflict of interest/bias). Having noticed that you've edited his page in the past, I'm wondering if you'd be willing pop over there and give it a look? Even just a comment or some recommendations on how to proceed would be very helpful, as I am new to Wikipedia and know that there are sensitivities around credible editing. Thanks! Hi GabeIglesia. Rollback granted

Hi GabeIglesia. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Proposed revisions to White House press corps definition and one subtitle

The White House press corps is commonly understood to be comprised of members of the media who are exclusively (for larger media organizations) or predominantly (for smaller media organizations) assigned to the White House. These members would include correspondents, reporters and producers. I am suggesting, therefore, that the subtitle "Correspondents" is perhaps too limiting.

Perhaps the opening paragraph should read: The White House press corps is comprised of members of the media assigned to the White House in Washington, D.C. to cover the President of the United States, White House events, and news briefings. Their offices are located in the West Wing.

And then, perhaps the subtitle "Correspondents" should be "Members."

@Azzurroribbon: Hi! Great suggestion. We can consider those changes. Also, for substance-related suggestions for articles, it would be preferable if you posted on the article's talk page, as opposed to a user's talk page. That way, editors can view suggestions for specific article changes and start a discussion about them. Thanks! Gabe Iglesia (talk) 18:16, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with Amb. Robert A. Mandell?

Hello, GabeIglesia! You offered to help me in the past edit the article on Ambassador Colleen Bell in December 2015. While that request was completed soon after we talked, I have another edit request you can check out if you're still interested in articles about ambassadors. My new edit request is on the article for Robert A. Mandell, the U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg from 2011 to 2015. The existing article is short and haphazard. My draft expands on Mr. Mandell's life, career, and ambassadorship, while cleaning up some existing content. I'm here asking for another editor to review and consider implementing it is because I am working on behalf of Mr. Mandell, as I've disclosed on the article's discussion page. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 18:10, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
