    The Christmas Sled

    This is going to be one lonesome holiday tomorrow. Every year before this I was stationed somewhere I could at least call home and talk to the folks. Even on the ship we used a radio link.

    Nicholas Levine recently signed over for another six years, that drastic decision—at least his buddy Bill Haynes thought it drastic—put into effect once Nick determined the Navy was to be his career. Nick had come off the U.S.S. Abathcsa. The Navy declared that pre-World War II minesweeper to be surplus, and scheduled it for salvage. Nick was transferred to Ship Repair Facility, Guam, when the Abathcsa was condemned, and he met Bill on the cargo/troopship, U.S.S. Davidson, on the crossing from San Francisco. Bill was on that troop manifest, having completed his electronics school at Treasure Island Naval Base in San Francisco Bay, and bound for the same duty station as Nick.

    With little to do on the long slow voyage, and assigned to the same station at their destination, the pair buddied up, in spite of Nick’s six years more in their ages. Following their eighteen months working together
