In last week's mobility poll we asked, "Think about transport where you live. What is the biggest problem that needs fixing?" And this is how you answered: Excessive congestion 30% Inadequate public transport 39% Poor infrastructure design 15% Not enough proper bike lanes 17% Cities can make huge improvements to their public transport simply by focusing on smarter management. To take one example, Tees Valley Combined Authority is transforming bus reliability by using a digital twin to predict future network conditions, allowing traffic management actions to be implemented either automatically or with a human user in the loop. This week's Aimsun shout-out goes to Marvin Nguku of Nottingham Trent University for his master's thesis on the impacts of gradual penetration of automated vehicles on existing transport systems. Martin investigated the gradual integration of Automated Vehicles (AVs) with Human-Driven Vehicles (HDVs) in a mixed-traffic scenario on the A14 Motorway in Cambridge, focussing on the effects on mobility and the environmental impacts. Aimsun Next software allowed a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the interaction of AVs at different penetration levels (10%,20%, 30% and 100%) with HDVs in mixed-traffic environments to evaluate changes in mean travel time, average speed and volume for mobility and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for environmental impact. TRANSPORT SCHEME APPRAISAL - The use of Aimsun simulation models for appraising transport schemes is a key theme of the upcoming Aimsun User Day. We'll have presentations from Hydrock, now Stantec, AECOM, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester. Tessa Hayman will present an update to Aimsun’s work, supervised by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, defining a methodology for practitioners to follow when developing dynamic assignment models to ensure that they are sufficiently stable and convergent for transport scheme appraisal. Excerpt from the draft paper: “The UK Department of Transport (DfT) provides guidance on the appraisal of transport schemes in the set of documents and software tools known as Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG). TAG provides information on how to conduct an appraisal that meets the requirements of the DfT, including guidance on the development of transport models. This guidance is widely used across the UK to give confidence in the reliability of transport models when the model is going to be used to appraise a transport scheme, building evidence to support business cases and funding decisions. It is compulsory that it is used for interventions that require government approval, however it serves as best practice for the use of transport models and appraisal across the UK. Until 2024, TAG largely focused on static highway assignment models and 4-step variable demand models. However, in May 2024, additional guidance was given on microsimulation, activity based and agent-based models. Despite this, there is still a gap on dynamic assignment and how it can be used to provide robust evidence for appraisal and operational analysis of transport schemes. This document seeks to give guidance on how a dynamic model can be coded and used to provide robust evidence for option design, operational analysis, and appraisal.” To learn more, sign up now for our Aimsun User Day! NEW ARTICLE - Advanced traffic management solutions play a crucial role in enhancing mobility, reducing congestion and ensuring resilient multimodal services. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as AI-driven algorithms, real-data analytics and simulation, these solutions empower cities to respond effectively to traffic incidents, foster multimodal connectivity and optimize transport network performance. In this new article, Antonio Pellicer Pous, a scientific researcher at Aimsun, explains how cities and authorities can effectively implement these integrated multimodal solutions to master network and traffic management by using the toolbox developed by the SYNCHROMODE Project (funded by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency).
