For the first time in humans, a study shows supplementation with the popular mushroom, Cordyceps sinensis (500 mg/2x/day) accelerated stem cell recruitment in skeletal muscle post-high-intensity exercise. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study published in the journal Food & Function examined the modulation of different stem cell populations [CD34+ and Pax7+(referred to as “satellite cells”)] within the vastus lateralis muscle (muscle of the quadriceps) by Cordyceps, providing compelling evidence that the fungi enhances post-exercise muscle recovery and regeneration. Cordyceps supplementation was given at 500mg/2x/day (dosage included a total of 3.5 mg of adenosine and 40 mg of polysaccharide) 11 hours pre-exercise and 1-hour pre-exercise. Key Findings: *CD34+ cells are highly concentrated in damaged skeletal muscle post-exercise and contribute to Pax7+(satellite cell) concentrations. *Cordyceps taken before exercise accelerated CD34+ cell build-up in damaged muscle tissue (increasing CD34+ and Pax7+ cells 4-fold at 3 hours post-exercise compared to placebo). *Cordyceps supplementation accelerated the resolution of inflammation post-exercise compared to placebo. Past research has shown that Cordyceps increases the activity of the initial inflammation phase (i.e., phagocytosis of human monocytes) - which would precede regeneration of injured skeletal muscle (PMID: 17029726, 28163303) This research highlights Cordyceps sinensis as a potential ergogenic aid by applying a “pro-inflammatory preconditioning” stimulus helping to accelerate the resolution of muscle inflammation induced by exercise. Note: this study only used 14 participants and cannot make inferences about long-term muscle adaptations consequential to Cordyceps supplementation pre-exercise. https://lnkd.in/ggNuzDHD

As investment in startups slowly recovers up across Europe & the US, #biotechnolgy exits and M&A are taking the lead. Life Sciences startups are consistently being acquired at high valuations, and if the numbers from the first semester of 2024 hold, this will be the best year for biotech exits since 2021. The end-of-year estimate is over $220 billion in total value - that's about 40% of all startups exits globally.
