CObalt-free Batteries for FutuRe Automotive Applications

Sobre nosotros

COBRA aims to develop a novel Co-free Li-ion battery technology that overcomes many of the current shortcomings faced by Electrical Vehicle (EV) batteries via the enhancement of each component in the battery system in a holistic manner. The project will result in a unique battery system that merges several sought after features, including superior energy density, low cost, increased cycles and reduced critical materials. To achieve these ambitious targets we will: upgrade the electrochemical performance by focusing on Co-free cathode, advanced Si composite as anode and electrolyte/separator; cell manufacturing and testing for electrical and electrochemical performance; leverage the use of smart sensors and advanced communication to optimise the system control; battery-pack manufacturing that deliver cost-effective and environmentally sustainable battery over its lifetime. The proposed Li-ion battery technology will be demonstrated at TRL6 (battery pack) and validated it on an automotive EV testbed. The involvement of several leading organisation for battery manufacturing ensure easy adaptation to production lines and scale up to contribute to a higher market adoption while helping to strengthen Europe’s position in the field. Overall, the project includes the participation of 3 universities, 7 RTOs, 4 SMEs and 5 enterprises covering the entire value chain and strongly engaging EU battery industry.

The European Union is steadfast in its commitment to becoming a climate-neutral economy with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a core objective of the #EuropeanGreenDeal and in line with the Paris Agreement. To reinforce this commitment, the European Climate Law mandates a reduction of net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Meeting these ambitious targets requires a rapid shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, with batteries playing a pivotal role in this transition, particularly within the transport and energy sectors. The EU’s strategic pivot towards electrification aims not only to meet #decarbonisation targets but also to enhance energy security by reducing dependency on foreign fuels. This transition is set to reshape the European #battery value chain, driving innovation, investment, and strategic autonomy in energy technology. 🇪🇺 🔋 📈 Our new #MarketIntelligence Report discusses the EU's battery strategy and policies, outlining the ambitions and challenges at the European level. Additionally, the report features insights from battery policy experts Fabrice Stassin and Wouter IJzermans (BEPA - Batteries European Partnership Association), providing a comprehensive overview of the current policy landscape, implementation challenges from an industrial perspective, and future prospects. 📢 COBRA's European consortium of 18 partners from the automotive industry, research, and technology specialists, has developed a complete cobalt-free lithium-ion battery system for electric vehicles. This system integrates a series of innovations in safety, control, and efficiency, intended for the next generation of batteries. 🔋With a budget of €12 million, COBRA, co-financed by the European Commission, has completed 4 years of this “ambitious plan” with a full demonstration of the system. The battery pack, designed to be lighter, also incorporates innovative sensors, algorithms, and communications developed by the initiative. 🗣 According to Lluis Trilla, senior researcher at IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, the lead partner of the project, the most complex challenge has been “the integration of all the innovations” into a “single demonstrator” made with materials such as treated wood and recycled aluminium, which have reduced its external weight by 30% compared to other batteries.   “The most interesting novelty is the innovative design of the BMS -Battery Management System- that incorporates internal wireless communications in the system, executing a series of algorithms and advanced models within the battery,” Trilla explained. “A lot of sensors” have been added to obtain “greater control” of the system. 💡The complete battery system, consisting of 96 individual cobalt-free lithium-ion cells, contains temperature, deformation, and impedance sensors that inform the user about its status. Additionally, a pressure sensor and a gas detector can detect any internal reaction, providing useful information for monitoring its operation at all times. 🗣Iván Viáfara Delgado, an engineer from the Applus+ IDIADA Battery Systems Department, considers this 400-volt demonstrator – the standard for batteries – to be “functional and relevant” since tests on the prototypes at the voltage and capacity level, although slightly lower than the standard, are applicable to the industry. The Spanish company, specialised in design, engineering, and certification services for the automotive industry, has been responsible, in collaboration with other consortium members, for planning and executing a set of tests for validating the prototype. To carry out this task, they adapted their internal system for conducting electrical safety, performance, and durability tests. The search for sustainable materials to drive #emobility forward lies at the heart of the EU's decarbonisation program. During last month's inaugural joint workshop hosted by the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS), COBRA Project coordinator Jordi Jacas Biendicho presented his research on cobalt-free Li-rich oxides as a promising cathode material for generation 3b batteries. This event marked the beginning of a collaborative workshop series among the four University Chapters of the Materials Research Society and E-MRS (Paris, Cologne, Hasselt, and Genova). These workshops aim to spotlight pertinent themes within #MaterialsScience and promote further exchange and collaboration among Materials Science and Engineering stakeholders on both European and international scales. You can read more here ➡ https://lnkd.in/eKKjFhFJ Thank you for providing this platform to present COBRA's research!
