Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de visitar las instalaciones de Leitat Technological Center, un centro tecnológico de referencia en Terrassa, para conocer de primera mano los avances que están realizando en tecnologías de hidrógeno. En un mundo donde la transición hacia las energías limpias es más urgente que nunca, el hidrógeno se posiciona como un elemento esencial para superar las limitaciones actuales de las energías renovables. Aunque la energía solar y eólica son pilares fundamentales de un futuro sostenible, su intermitencia plantea desafíos significativos. Es aquí donde el hidrógeno entra en juego, ofreciendo una solución viable para almacenar y distribuir energía de manera eficiente y flexible. Durante mi visita, los investigadores de Leitat me mostraron varios proyectos innovadores, incluyendo uno que busca almacenar hidrógeno en moléculas orgánicas. Este enfoque permite transportar hidrógeno en forma líquida, aumentando su densidad energética y facilitando su manejo. Estas innovaciones son cruciales para el futuro del transporte y la industria, sectores que necesitan soluciones energéticas que vayan más allá de la electrificación directa. Uno de los temas centrales que discutimos fue el uso del hidrógeno como sustituto del gas natural en procesos industriales. En muchos procesos de alta temperatura, como la producción de cemento o la metalurgia, la electrificación directa no es una opción viable. Aquí es donde el hidrógeno puede desempeñar un papel crucial, permitiendo una transición hacia una industria libre de emisiones de carbono. A medida que avancemos hacia un futuro más limpio, la capacidad del hidrógeno para reemplazar combustibles fósiles será un componente vital en nuestros esfuerzos por descarbonizar sectores difíciles de electrificar. Leitat está trabajando en mejorar la eficiencia de la producción de hidrógeno a través de la electrólisis, un proceso que divide el agua en oxígeno e hidrógeno utilizando electricidad. Me mostraron el proyecto X-SEED, que está enfocado en aumentar la eficiencia y reducir los costos de este proceso. El proyecto X-SEED es un ejemplo brillante de cómo la innovación puede llevarnos más cerca de un futuro sostenible, y está financiado por la Iniciativa Europea de Hidrógeno Limpio (European Clean Hydrogen Alliance). Además, aprendí sobre el uso de nanofibras de carbono en los electrodos utilizados en la electrólisis. Estas nanofibras aumentan la superficie de contacto y, con ello, la eficiencia del proceso. En el proyecto 3DTHINKS, Leitat Technological Center y 3dthinks están desarrollando una app 📱 donde la iconografía y lenguaje representado🖼️ sustituyen a las palabras, facilitando la conversación a través de imágenes. Gracias a la experiencia en IA de Leitat, estamos mejorando un software capaz de generar pictogramas específicos y complejos al instante, como "una tabla de surf en la playa" 🏄♂️ o "tener sed" 🥤. Así, los usuarios podrán expresar mejor sus pensamientos y emociones.
