TECH TALKS: HEATHERWICK STUDIO This summer, we launched a new series of talks known as "Tech Talks," where we bring in architecture professionals to delve into the more technical aspects of our field. The goal is to educate and motivate us within our industry. Our first session featured a conversation with Alfonso Monedero, the Head of BIM at Heatherwick studio, who shared valuable insights into the significance of BIM within a 250-person studio focused on large-scale projects. Alfonso discussed the relationship between design and BIM at Heatherwick, emphasizing the significance of design focused on human experience and materiality. He also outlined his three-step approach to working: strategy, management, and digital tools. Alfonso used the Olympia project as an example to demonstrate the practical application of these steps and addressed the need to adapt BIM implementation based on factors such as region, project complexity, and client requirements. ALULA MUSIC HUB: BEING ONE WITH THE LANDSCAPE In line with the vision of creating an exclusive music-making experience, the AlUla Music Hub is strategically positioned at the canyon's centre, hidden away from the nearby hotel's volumes and set to frame the impressive landscape views. The structure aims to integrate with its surroundings, using the natural slope to blend the building into the landscape without altering the existing topography, which creates varying heights within the same space. Our RD Table is a bespoke design in solid elondo wood inspired by its destination, the Dominican Republic. Handcrafted by artisan cabinetmakers, this dining table is an impressively dense piece of about 920kg/m3. Finished in a red tone, the piece features slats fitted by metal joints and carved legs, reminiscent of the context's landscape. CASA TER: USING LOCAL BUILDING MATERIALS Casa Ter is located in Baix Empordà, an area that functions as an intersection between three natural landscapes: sea, mountain, and field. In order to make this context tangible to its users, the home is made out of two volumes which create three different spaces, each branching out towards one of the surrounding landscapes, touching as little of the natural surroundings as possible. Following the local construction traditions of the region, the walls of Casa Ter are composed of KM0 materials, using a mix of concrete and stones from the local river Ter with ceramics, a material with a long cultural tradition in the neighbouring La Bisbal, where the material makes for one of the main economic activities. RT133: A NEW ENTITY IN POBLENOU An office is the expression of a company’s personal identity. Being a place where we spend most of our time, its design has become more important than ever, if we want to use space as a tool to generate happiness, wellbeing, and creativity. The office today in no longer static and rigid, but a synergetic space, combining functionality, personality and a holistic philosophy. For RT133, a new entity in the Poblenou neighbourhood, we were in charge of the interior design and spatial strategy. The building is a 4927 gross built + 787 external sqm warehouse dedicated to the tech and creative industries, attracted by interior spaces that nurture the neighbourhood and a more sustainable future. ALULA MUSIC HUB: BEING ONE WITH THE LANDSCAPE In line with the vision of creating an exclusive music-making experience, the Hub is strategically positioned at the canyon's centre, hidden away from the hotel's volumes, set to frame the impressive views of AlUla. The structure aims to integrate with its surroundings, using the natural slope to blend the building into the landscape without altering the existing topography, which creates varying heights within the same space. The flat roof, resembling a protective shell, adjusts to these height requirements, forging a seamless connection between the interior and exterior, reinforcing a feeling of seclusion. Mimicking the sand dunes, the roof and exterior columns are built in rammed earth, while the core uses birch wood, a very acoustic material. With a simple 360º layout, the project nods to traditional Bedouin tents. It splits the floor into four areas, all catering to the different stages of the creative process: one master recording studio, two smaller recording rooms, and a lobby. Each space is different, and so is the view it frames, which adds layering and dynamism to the experience. On the outside, the buffer area and its perimeter are characterized by lightweight, hanging curtains, which the user can adjust to set the mood.
