The Ocean Born Foundation is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the Silver Certification by SUPER (Single-Use Plastic Elimination or Reduction). This recognition certifies that we have significantly eliminated single-use plastics in our workplace, aligning with our mission to #ProtectWhatYouLove and contribute to larger solutions for our climate and future. We are deeply grateful to our supporters at SUPER, Tracy Wilson and Manuel Maqueda, for being integral to our journey and success. It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight if we do not make the necessary changes to our daily lives. For SUPER, these changes can begin in the workplace. Indeed, single-use plastics pose an urgent and enormous problem in the workplace: SUPER estimates that U.S. businesses alone spend $34 billion on single-use plastics every year, resulting in 10 million tons of waste that go to landfills. Yes, over 90% of single-use plastics produced globally have not been recycled and end up in landfills, incinerators, and our ocean. SUPER (Single-Use Plastic Elimination or Reduction) is a California-based nonprofit that helps businesses deplastify, cutting financial and environmental costs through footprinting technology and a tiered certification program. Working with offices worldwide, SUPER has engaged over 3,500 employees and counting, and strives to offer their certifications to more sectors, including hospitality, transportation, food service, and retail. With the AI boom in full swing, pressures on data centre infrastructure are rising, and solutions to improve heat, water, and energy efficiency are needed. Below, Ocean Born Impact Managing Director and Head of Research Fabio Greco dives into the challenges and opportunities within data centre resource management amidst the rise of AI.

Up until now oxygen production in the ocean without sunlight to trigger photosynthesis was thought to be impossible. However, this research from the Scottish Association For Marine Science has found that enormous amounts of oxygen are seemingly produced by naturally occurring metal-rich "nodules" on the seafloor, where sunlight never penetrates. This groundbreaking discovery serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance of ecosystems in the deep sea and how little we understand about this critical part of our planet, which makes up 90% of the marine environment. It’s also further confirmation of how little we know about our mysterious ocean and the benefits it can bring which makes the prospect of deep-sea mining troubling. Seabed mining would target these nodules for extraction, disrupting this newly discovered and vital process for all life on Earth, and disturbing the complex and fragile habitats they make up. Ocean health is inextricably linked to our planet’s health - without the ocean there can be no life. Coral reefs are critical indicators of rising ocean temperatures, given their sensitivity to environmental changes. Too many extreme changes to the marine environment upsets the important relationship between reefs and the microscopic algae living within the coral structures. As temperatures and acidification accelerate, driven by continued fossil fuel extraction and excessive consumption, the coral expels the algae and begins to starve. Currently, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is teetering on the brink of catastrophic destruction, a symptom of this mass global bleaching event that is affecting more than half of the world’s coral areas. But, as shown by this incredible episode from the “A Sea of Hope” series from SeaLegacy, one of the esteemed grantees of the Ocean Born Foundation, there is always hope. It brings to light the resilience of marine life if left protected. It’s seeing stories like these that inspire us to keep going and invest in the solutions that can scale and have impact. We at Ocean Born Impact also firmly believe that economic returns and positive planetary impact are not mutually exclusive.
