Perth Zoo celebrated the success of a new conservation initiative dedicated to protecting the critically endangered Hairy Marron, a freshwater crayfish native to the Margaret River, Australia. This species has faced a severe population decline due to competition and hybridisation with the Smooth Marron. Protecting the Hairy Marron is crucial for preserving the ecological balance of its habitat, since they are a key food source for other species while also preying on insects, snails and other crayfish. Perth Zoo has launched a collaborative breeding programme and has worked to increase the population, supporting the crayfish through key stages of reproduction. The programme has successfully bred and raised over 50 juvenile crayfish, known as craylings. 🔎 More about the crayfish conservation programme: https://ow.ly/ss4K50TjLAP

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo welcomed a Red River hoglet! Finn, an 8-year-old Red River hog, became a first-time mother two weeks ago when keepers discovered a newborn hoglet. Finn joined Cheyenne Mountain Zoo earlier this year following a breeding recommendation with Gus, the zoo’s 2-year-old male Red River hog. Red River hogs are integral to their ecosystems, playing a significant role in regulating insect and small invertebrate populations. Their foraging behaviour improves soil health and promotes plant diversity. Conservation efforts focus on safeguarding their natural environments and mitigating the effects of human activities to ensure their populations remain stable. Yokohama Zoological Gardens, Zoorasia, welcomed a new okapi, marking the first successful breeding of an okapi at the zoo in a decade! The female, Lala, was paired with the male, Bakari, at the end of May 2023. Studies conducted with a local breeding centre confirmed Lala's pregnancy. The gestation period for okapis typically ranges from 14 to 15 months. The arrival of this okapi highlights Zoorasia’s commitment to conserving this endangered species. As one of the few zoos in Japan to care for okapis, Zoorasia’s work is essential to their preservation. Okapis are classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List and are threatened by illegal hunting and habitat loss. 💡 Find out more https://ow.ly/7CWX50ThsSr

Bristol Zoo Project welcomed a Visayan tarictic hornbill. This breeding success contributes to the conservation of this endangered species. With fewer than 1,800 remaining in the wild, the Visayan tarictic hornbill is facing rapid population decline in the Philippines due to deforestation and hunting. Alongside breeding efforts, the zoo is working with local partners to monitor the status of this species in the Visayan region and to protect their habitats. This demonstrates the crucial role of multistakeholder partnerships and collaboration in halting biodiversity decline. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park welcomed two snow leopard cubs, born to mother Rahala, bringing the total number of snow leopards at the zoo to 11. Native to the Himalayas and Central Asian mountains, snow leopards face threats from habitat loss and poaching, with an estimated 4,000 to 8,000 individuals remaining in the wild. As apex predators, they are essential for regulating prey populations and maintaining ecological balance. The Snow Leopard Breeding Project at Darjeeling Zoo is one of the most successful breeding programmes in Southeast Asia, contributing significantly to the conservation of this vulnerable species. The zoo's ongoing research and conservation efforts are key to ensuring the survival of snow leopards in their native environments. 📰 Learn more about the snow leopard https://ow.ly/jx1550Tf4mG
