Joan Martí's been a cluster practitioner for more than 20 years.. He's author of the Book "Clusters:winning strategies and teamwork", a journey through cluster development with specific examples from different sectors and from the 5 continents. A practical tool for companies, cluster managers and policymakers.

His current occupation is Director of Business Strategy at ACCIÓ, the Catalan Agency for Competitiveness,Catalonia Government. Currently, he's involved in 20+ different clusters, for instance, the Food Retail , Fashion, Advanced Materials, Protein, Beauty or Sports. Nowadays, he's working with more than 2.000 companies which are involved actively in the Catalan clusters.

The Business Strategy Unit he leads contributes to a balanced competitiveness model of Catalonia through the Territorial Delegations which lead transformational projects and support firms with potential, often hidden champions. It also deploys specialized assessment on innovation management to help companies innovating in business models. Moreover, he's been involved in the launching and ramp up of the Next Generation Office to provide specialized advice to companies on these programs.

He's led international benchmarking trips to Borgomannero, Italy (Taps cluster, 2007); Slovenia (Ventilation cluster, 2009); Florence, Italy (Lighting cluster, 2011); Luxembourg (advanced materials cluster, 2012).

He's led international missions of cluster managers to Boston (2012), Silicon Valley (2014), Québec (2015), Korea (2016), Singapore (2017), New York (2018) and Boston (2022).

As a cluster practitioner he's member of TCI network, and he's been a speaker in their International Congresses in Lyon (2006), Portland (2007), Cape Town (2008), Chihuahua (2008), Jyväskylä (2009), Delhi (2010), Auckand (2011), Euskadi (2012),Denmark (2013), Monterrey (2014), Korea (2015), Eindhoven (2016), Bogotá (2017), Toronto (2018) and Antwerp (2019). He's also a TCI mentor on its mentoring program.

He's been a Peer Reviewer on cluster development at Highlands & Islands (Scotland).

He's been also a speaker in cluster conferences /seminars in South Korea, Brussels, Brasil, Turkey, Mexico, Croatia, Poland, Ireland, Slovenia, Wales, Morocco, Sweden, Costa Rica and Ireland.

He has presented Catalonia Cluster Policy at Harvard (Boston, 2024).

He has teached cluster strategy at several Business Schools and Universities such as IESE, ESADE, EADA, UPC, URV, Popakademie Baden Württemberg.

His expertise is focused on clusters, strategic change, shared value and innovation.

    Joan Martí, the author, describes the book as:

    The book is a journey through the world of clusters, not only in geographical terms (with examples from the 5 continents), but also as for the process which starts with understanding how clusters are born, how they are led by key people, how they're organized in an innovative governance and foster transformational projects.

    The book’s philosophy is to provide a practical tool to help countries, regions, cities, companies and organizations in general to understand that they can be competitive in this changing world if they understand their capabilities and implement the needed winning strategies. To do so they will probably need a partner to travel together in the road to competitiveness, the perfect partner is the one sharing the same challenges, the cluster partner.

    It’s a practical book, based on storytelling from best practices and errors to be avoided in different sectors and countries. An optimistic approach thanks to its positioning as a tool for any strategist to be successful leading a project despite the difficulties of our environment. Including learnings and experiences from the author’s international background.
