How To Write Film and Video Activities
ELT Teacher2Writer
We are living in a video age – and so are our students. In 2014, 300 hours of video content was uploaded to YouTube every minute. Video has become so widely accepted as the optimum medium for getting information, that YouTube is the second largest search engine. This module looks at how we can use this ‘medium of choice’ to teach English.

Video has become so widely accepted as the optimum medium for getting information, that YouTube is the second largest search engine. This module looks at how we can use this ‘medium of choice’ to teach English.
With such an embarrassment of riches, the question ‘Where do I find video?’ has been replaced with ‘How do I choose appropriate video?’ Kieran Donaghy and Anna Whitcher lead you through this minefield, providing essential guidance on how to choose exploitable video for the purposes of writing video activities for the ELT classroom. They share their knowledge of the best sources of high-quality video and discuss criteria for selection, such as syllabus fit, language level, length, relevance and task potential. Once you’ve chosen a great video, they’ll show you how to write a variety of activities to exploit it.
Kieran runs the award-winning website Film English, and is also the founder of The Image Conference. Anna is an ELT writer, editor and video producer.
This module forms part of the ELT Teacher 2 Writer training course. The training modules are designed to help you write better ELT materials, either for publication, or simply to improve the quality of your self-produced classroom materials.Other authorsSee publication -

Films in Health Sciences Education
Universitat de Barcelona Publicacions i edicions
Films in Health Sciences Education combines the study of medical themes and film analysis. Subjects related to health care of interest to doctors, nurses, pharmacists and psychologists among others, are presented alongside an analysis of film language. The ten films analysed in the book all deal with a disease or health problem that is relevant to the plot; they cover a wide range of pathologies and include patients of all ages.

The rationale behind The Image Conference is that today we are saturated with visual stimulation and that the visual image has taken over. In the twenty-first century, the ability to interpret, analyse and create images is an integral part of literacy. The aim of The Image Conference is to put images at the centre of the language learning agenda and offer guidance on using images critically and creatively in language teaching in the age of the Internet. The Image Conference brings together leading experts and practitioners in the use of images in language learning who share their experiences, insights and know-how and provides participants with an excellent opportunity to enhance their competence in the innovative and creative use of images. The Image Conference takes place in a different city every year; so far the conference has taken place in Barcelona, Brasilia, Córdoba and Munich.
