"While the findings regarding the initial differences suggested that gifted students start out with slightly more favourable motivational patterns in their regular class than other students, the comparison between grades revealed that this motivational advantage seems to disappear toward the end of primary school." Motivation is more complex than just to be or not to be motivated, and our findings suggest that there's more to motivation of children with high abilities than them generally being 'more' or 'less' motivated than age mates. The highlights of our study: * We compared motivation of children with high abilities and their classmates in regular classes. * Students reported on multiple motivational dimensions during two school years. * Children with high abilities initially reported more intrinsic motivation. * However, they reported a stronger increase in external regulation and amotivation than their classmates. * Children with high abilities were more likely to transition to more unfavourable motivation profiles. Zijn begaafde basisschoolleerlingen in reguliere klassen minder gemotiveerd voor school dan hun klasgenoten? Er wordt vaak aangenomen dat dit zo is, maar eerdere onderzoeksresultaten laten juist zien dat begaafde leerlingen vaak meer intrinsieke motivatie hebben dan andere leerlingen. Een recente studie vanuit POINT had tot doel hier meer duidelijkheid over te geven. Aan het onderzoek deden 79 begaafde leerlingen (met een IQ > 120) en hun klasgenoten mee. Zij zaten in groep 5 t/m 8 van de basisschool. In het onderzoek werd niet alleen gekeken naar hun intrinsieke motivatie voor school, maar ook naar andere typen motivatie, waaronder extrinsieke motivatie en amotivatie (amotivatie houdt in dat leerlingen weinig gemotiveerd zijn voor hun schoolwerk). De resultaten van dit onderzoek laten zien dat de meeste begaafde leerlingen en hun klasgenoten een vrij hoge kwaliteit van motivatie hebben. Beide groepen leerlingen rapporteren gemiddeld relatief veel intrinsieke motivatie en relatief weinig extrinsieke motivatie en amotivatie. Bij de eerste meting van het onderzoek was de motivatie van begaafde leerlingen nog wat gunstiger dan van hun klasgenoten, maar een jaar later was dit voordeel verdwenen. Richting het einde van de basisschool namen bij begaafde leerlingen de extrinsieke motivatie en amotivatie toe, terwijl dit niet zo was bij hun klasgenoten. Begaafde leerlingen lopen dus het risico om aan het einde van de basisschool minder gemotiveerd te raken. Het bieden van meer uitdaging en voldoende ondersteuning binnen de reguliere klas en het aansluiten bij de interesses zijn manieren die kunnen bijdragen aan het voorkomen van motivationele problemen bij begaafde basisschoolleerlingen.
