It's exciting to see progress towards cleaning the heavily polluted waters of the Bogota River! This week, the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá announced it received four expressions of interest for developing the Canoas Wastewater Treatment Plant. As someone who contributed to the legal planning of this project, I am particularly enthusiastic about its advancement. Let's continue pushing forward this initiative that underscores the critical role of infrastructure projects in achieving sustainable development. https://lnkd.in/e7GhDCYA development.

The benefits of building with geosynthetics in landfill cappings. Geosynthetics offer reliable, economical, environmentally sustainable solutions to solve construction challenges in landfills. The key feature of these geosynthetics is their multifunctionality, which means they can be designed to address with one product several functions: drainage, separation, filtration, protection, and veneer stabilization. This multifunctional ability of geosynthetics not only allows construction companies faster construction at lower cost but also significantly lowers the use of natural resources and decreases the need for land. This provides durable and sustainable solutions with lower CO2 footprints. More information on LCA's, applications and benefits can be found on the EAGM website https://www.eagm.eu. #geosynthetics #geotextiles #advantages #civilengineering #civilconstruction #buildingmaterial #buildingproducts #contractors #construction #surfaceerosion #eagm #reducecarbonfootprint #carbon #sustainability #landfill

🙌 Huge congratulations to our PDRA, Angeliki Kourmouli and Environment Agency for the release of their report "Potential for a Soil Reuse and Storage system in England!" 🙌 You’ve perhaps heard of insect hotels but what about #soil hotels? 🏨 Sometimes thought of as the ‘Cinderella’ of the natural world, soils store more carbon than the atmosphere and vegetation combined, are a precious #resource which all too often goes unnoticed, underappreciated and at worst, simply thrown away. 🌍 Over 50% of the soil deriving from #construction and demolition projects in England finds its way into landfill, arising to £1.42 billion annually as a functional value loss. Although is some cases soil has become contaminated, and poses a risk to people and the planet if not disposed of carefully, in the overwhelming majority of cases (98.% was classified as inert waste) perfectly safe soil is sent via skips to landfill each year. 🗑 Drawing on examples of best practice from New York to the Netherlands, Lancaster University researchers along with the Environment Agency and other university partners are working to tackle the amount of soil that finds its way into landfill each year with a series of policy recommendations and the introduction of a soil #reuse and storage system, including soil ‘hotels’ and ‘hospitals’. 🏥 In their report, Soil Hotels are defined as ‘fixed facilities for temporary relocation of clean, natural soils’, whereas Soil Hospitals would be facilities for treatment of contaminated soils as well as manufacturing soil with improved quality. Soil is a limited, #nonrenewable source and underpins a plethora of vital #ecosystem services essential to climate control, water quality, nutrient cycling and more. It forms incredibly slowly, is lost at variable rates through natural erosion or abruptly and in large volumes (from 2 up to 40,000 times greater than pre-construction conditions) as a result of the construction industry. ♻ Angeliki Kourmouli, lead author said: “Soils are often overlooked when it comes to a construction or development project, and their management is not considered during the early planning stages." "Moreover, storing soil on-site has been described as a critical obstacle when it comes to soil reuse. We believe that with some changes we could develop a pathway towards a more circular and better management of soil in England." Happy World Environment Day! On this day, we share some eye-opening facts on why PEB Solutions are the future of sustainable construction: 1. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that traditional construction generates 23% of air pollution and 40% of drinking water pollution, whereas prefabricated construction cuts energy consumption by 67%. 2. Waste reduction is notable, with traditional methods wasting around 30% of building materials, while prefabrication lowers this to 1.8%, according to the Waste & Resources Action Program (WRAP). 3. With construction primarily conducted offsite in controlled environments, noise pollution is minimized, benefiting workers and neighbouring communities. 4. In terms of carbon emissions, studies by MDPI and the Modular Building Institute reveal an 86 kg per square meter reduction and up to 45% less carbon emitted by PEBs, respectively, compared to traditional construction. . . . . #nezonegroup #worldenvironmentday #steel #circulareconomy #sustainablility #PEB #Reliability #Innovation #PreEngineeredBuildings #PEBStructures #NezonePEB

Construction Industry- A major contributor to the greenhouse emissions. What is the solution? Lets together find them. According to new research by construction blog Bimhow, the construction sector contributes to 23% of air pollution, 50% of the climatic change, 40% of drinking water pollution, and 50% of landfill wastes. In separate research by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the construction industry accounts for 40% of worldwide energy usage, with estimations that by 2030 emissions from commercial buildings will grow by 1.8%. Furthermore, according to the EPA, construction activity can “significantly change the surface of a land” due in large part to “clearing of vegetation and excavating” which is common on many construction projects. According to the agency, the result means surrounding environments can be heavily polluted, particularly surrounding water pools, which have experienced an increase in pollution as a result of various construction projects in recent years. Additionally, research by Kleiwerks says that building material, such as concrete, aluminum, and steel, are directly responsible for “large quantities of CO2 emissions” due to high contents of “embodied energy content”, with 9.8 million tons of CO2 generated from the production of “76 million tons of finished concrete in the US.” The research also says that the construction sector’s current practices at reducing pollutants, or omissions, are massively ineffective and may even “generate high levels of greenhouse gas pollution.” Worryingly enough, construction activities consume “half of all the resources” extracted from nature, and account for one-sixth of global freshwater consumption, one-quarter of wood consumption, and one-quarter of global waste,” according to the research. #constructionindustry #cementindustry #steelproducers #solidwastemanagement #greenmeasures #greenbuildings #architects #townplanners #centralgovernment #stategovernments #research

We design buildings to respect the natural topography. In our residential project Balador Athena, we have successfully tackled complex problems of energy and site management by employing simple technologies. We at IMK Architects have achieved this by doing the following: 🟠 Minimise environmental impact by incorporating wastewater management, stormwater management and processes for the treatment & disposal of all types of waste within the township. 🟠Reuse wastewater from the homes for landscaping and groundwater recharge. 🟠Reduce stormwater runoff by making the groundwater recharging network mimic the original water flow patterns of the terrain. 🟠Drain excess water and prevent water logging by using rooftop rainwater harvesting and stormwater drainage systems. 🟠Segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste; dry waste is sent for recycling, and wet waste is treated by an ‘Organic Waste Converter’ for compositing. #IMKArchitects #ResidentialDesign #MinimiseEnvironmentalImpact #SustainablePractices
