3. Los negativos con ‘not’.
En el negativo, NO usamos don’t/doesn’t etc. Usamos «should» + «not»:
I should not study.
No debería estudiar.
You should not come.
No deberías venir.
They should not help.
No deberían ayudar.
I shouldn’t study.
No debería estudiar.
You shouldn’t come.
No deberías venir.
They shouldn’t help.
No deberían ayudar.

1. El pasado de ‘Can’
“Could” es el pasado del verbo “can” y corresponde en castellano al pretérito del
indicativo de “poder” (pude, pudiste…) y, a veces, al imperfecto del indicativo de
“poder” (podía, podías…)
I could see him.
Podía / pude verlo.
We couldn’t go to the concert.
No pudimos ir al concierto.
2. El condicional de ‘Can’
“Could” también es el condicional del verbo “can” y corresponde en castellano
al condicional del verbo “poder” (podría, podrías…)
I could go to London.
Podría irme a londres.
We could buy a new car.
Podríamos comprar un coche nuevo.
Un Modal Verb
“Could” es un “Modal Verb” (verbo modal).
Los modal verbs son un grupo especial de verbos y se portan de manera diferente a los
demás verbos.
Regla #1
No van con los verbos auxiliares (do, did, will, won’t …) de hecho, los modal verbs son
una especie de verbo auxiliar u muchas veces les llamamos “modal auxiliary verbs”
Regla #2
No existen en algunos tiempos verbales (por ejemplo, el futuro)
Regla #3
Se conjuga igual para todas las personas, por ejemplo, veamos el verbo “can” en el
presente simple:
I can – Puedo
You can – Puedes
He/She / It can – Puede
We can – Podemos
You can – Podéis
They can – Pueden
+ I could sing.
(Podía cantar).
